SQHD rear with big axles & full spool
F106 steering front axle with big axles & locked & hyd steering.

Take a look at what proformance pros has to offer. Hope you have a deep wallet though. :D

IMO a D60 with big shafts can last in most 3.0 trucks. The R&P might start being a problem for the baddest 3.0 trucks though. And yes, even an IFS can work in big power situations with some fancy goodies. It'd be interesting to see how an ifs would last in a top-performing 3.0 truck.

If going mod class (where the sigma pumps & triple chargers & billet heads/blocks are) you're gonna need more beef out front, period. Enter, big GM military steer axle or F106 with big shafts, spindles & locker/spool.

Most say the F106 rear can be built stout enough to last in most 3.0 trucks except maybe the baddest ones in the country. I believe the SQHD is one of the stoutest one used except built sheet metal rear ends. And even then, they use the diff from an SQHD and the sheet metal just allows it to be lighter weight than the original SQHD housing/center & humongous axle tubes.

So what are you building? Tube chassis mod/open truck or A 3.0 ODL truck?

I hate to do it but there's some really good discussions on this topic over on CompD too.

3.0 odl drive for now. but if i decide to go bigger i want the chassis mostly done right the first time. i sold the front diff already so i am going to be putting a straight axle in for sure.

A D60 front and F106 will hold up if built with good parts but the 106 front with a H172 rear may be slightly stronger. Run some low gears in the 6.xx range to keep u-joints alive. Other then that you pretty much have it covered.

if you want something bigger than a 106 there is a semi rear end that came out of a certain year freightliner that came stock with an aluminum center. it will be much lighter that a sqhd. the big boys are going that route and staying away from sqhd. some 3.0 classes u must have an automotive housing which means you cant run a sheet metal housing.

i put a chevy dana 60 in my 3.0 truck. we used afco coil over shocks and made our own 4-link and trac bar.

if you're on a budget i would run a 106. some guys around me are making 1200+ and they are holding up with scs drop in 19 spline axles.

and like bubba said i would shoot for 6.17/6.20 or more expensive is 6.50/6.80

good luck

I thought the alum axle you're talking about is a different version of the sqhd. My understanding is they're available in steel or alum. Alum obviously being the cats meow. :D

you wont find it under a sqhd google search it takes a little bit of research to find them ;)
