I think the greater majority do most the stuff themselves or everything they can mainly because we don't have that kind of money sitting around lol forces you to learn how to do things because you dont have the money for parts and mechanic. Gives you pride sure but I think if a guy was rich most would probably have a truck built

If you've got the funds then spend it. That's my humble opinion. However, I wouldn't touch my transmission with a 10 foot pole, even if I couldn't afford a build. I'd rather save for a year to get one built by a reputable builder, than to try and hack shit up myself. Just an example, and my 2 cents of opinion.

If everyone was polite we'd all be liars. That rude clown probably has a sweet social media profile full of philosophy that he himself cannot explain.

I do work myself because, first, I don't have the money to buy a built motor, and two, I want the knowledge. That being said, I hesitate to ask the forum for certain things because I get the "why are you doing this if you don't know" line. Whatever, gotta start somewhere, and I'd rather ask and be made fun of, and end up knowing, than throwing something together without asking...

I have done a lot of different things to my truck. It is still basically a stock truck with some upgraded or improved parts. To me its more of the mentality that I have the knowledge and will do what I can. When I hydrolocked it, I pulled the cab, I pulled the heads, pulled the engine, dropped the heads off to have the checked and repaired, then put it all back together. Why? Because I enjoy it. When it came time for a transmission, NO WAY IN HELL was I going to open that thing. I made the drive from Houston to California to visit Mike. After talking to Mike, he told me that I could build one. Would I take that chance on an Allison, uhhh NO (at least not on my own the first time). Just like most people out there who work on whatever, they had to learn from someone.

To me "Built vs Bought" is a person who takes the time, energy, effort, research, and knowledge to assemble the best parts into his piece of equipment. Wether or not he actually turns the first wrench is not the point. Bought is someone who searches craigslist or some other resale site and purchases someone else's vision and work. If the owner gives credit to where the parts came from, then he is still the builder as it was his vision to put those parts into that vehicle.
