That all i have into my motor with howards rods :thumb: , but would have to do 100% of it your self including machining and find some cheap or free LB7 pistons .

i have a bridgeport and a lathe and plenty of time to learn the things i have not done. (cut and cc the pistons / key the crank and cam) as far as the block i don't know what i would have to do as long as i do this before something breaks. i think i have a source for the pistons still.

what would the motor need machining wise if i use the normal arp headstuds (not the big ones) and stock main bolts

Sadly the machine work you can do on a lathe and milling machine is the stuff that is cheap.

i have all winter and into the begining of spring to figure how and if i want to do mine.

help me compile a list with prices...

rods - $2700
head gaskets - $300
ARP headstuds - $650

What sort of misc bolts bearings etc would i need?

If you cut your own cam , crank, pistons, and skiped main studs , then the only machining would be a hone or torque plate hone, balance , and possibly poilish crank , and possibly line hone but if bearing wear is fine when you tear down then both can be skipped assuming the serfaces are good , i skipped the hone job myself because i re-used the piston rings , but i never even had to pull the rings off the pistons to cut them, they only had 69k on them, and made sure the pistons/rings went back into the holes they came out of . All the items you skip are smart steps to have done if you have the money and dont recomend it really , but if you dont then :D

could i get away with a simple ball hone?? i not be using main studs, just new oem main bolts. and arp head studs, will i need plate hone for them?? i know you can put them in one at a time when swapping them with the stock head bolts while the head is on but obviously i am going to be stripping the motor...

If you want to do it correctly.....different tq for studs = a new hone with tq plate and studs. But you will "most likely" get by without.

i think i will probably go without. this WILL NOT be a max effort motor, just a daily driver that will bring me to and from work, tow trailers now and again, and sled pull on weekends at the local fairs.

henry, have you compiled a "bag of parts" that are manditories for even a basic engine rebuild regardless of what parts are swapped in? I see you mentioned that the all inclusive master rebuild gasket/seal kit is more expensive than just buying what is needed and doesn't include the head gaskets. It probably be a hot item for you if you setup your own kit of necessities without stuff you don't need to replace.

Just a little aside that might be helpful. I know I'd certainly be adding a couple of them to my list! ;)

Mitch you just have to take your time on the tear down. Most of the gaskets can be reused and saves alot of money.

so the plan for now is going to be accumulate parts a little at a time starting with pistons cam and crank so i can take my time and do as much work myself as possible and balance everything externally.

i do not want a 'low compression' motor so i just want to de-lip lb7 pistons which will also make the cc process a little easier since i can do it on the bench.

is there any reason i could not run 'a' head gaskets? i want to keep my compression as high as possible since this will still be a daily driver and not a max effort build
