Best Coupling TC

I have read alot and seen alot of subjective opinions from guys who have only ran one or two converters, so I am assuming there is no concensus on what the best coupling TC out is. I am interested in a "tight" converter and for a stock turbo truck I do not need a high stall either.

So I guess I need to know what the top fluid coupling converters are

ML-G
1057?


Also I read a few threads on converter blow through, during unlocked high hp WOT instances, and I am assuming this is to be expected with every converter? Or only some depending on coupling? If so, is the best way around it a BT lock up box?

I believe Suncoast still builds the 1057. Either the 1057 or MLG are a couple of the best coupling converters out there.

I really like the way my 1054 couples. I have a Precision ML, DPC, 1057, and this 1054. The 1054 couples in the lower rpm range way better then the others. The lock up is super smooth too. My 1057 was very loose and lock up was very harsh. Sun coast website has the 1054 labeled wrong I think. It says it is looser then the 1057 but I can guarantee you that it is not. I have drove a 1056, stock lb7 turbo truck that seemed loose as well. The 1054 really seems to get the truck moving well with a lot less throttle then all the others I have been around.

Thanks for the input, its concerning when you hear stories alot about the same converter yielding different outputs. Not sure if in your case they label it incorrectly or it was just that converter.

I will be unhappy if I still have to get on the throttle alot to get the truck up to speed. Stock converters are no good

Pretty much.
It is not blow through. Blowing through a converter means you overpowered the clutch and slipped it.
What we're fighting is engine speed vs turbine speed. When that speed differential gets too high; the TCM will not command TCC till that speed falls back within programmed parameters.

I'm not gonna lie, I was not very happy with my 1057. I read a lot and figured it was the right one for me but I was wrong. I hated it. The harsh lockup was very annoying too.

I am not familiar with TCM tuning but it sounds like it can be avoided by tuning? Im sure thats a loaded statement though. Ill have to look into it.

that isn't something we can control.

We can tell the converter to lock all we want but like Mike said, if the speed differences are greater than what the TCM allows it wont lock.

Lock up box is the best way around this.

Is there a reason EFI Live is unable to allow us access to these section of the TCM or are the tables just not availible? sure would save alot of headache if we could get into them for lock up abilities.

I had a 1055 and well....lets just say.... I was doing 90 before it locked in 5th but when it did it locked hard. That converter would lock so hard at times it would "bark" the turbo (S472) I'll never forget those days, usually getting on the on ramp or something. Man it was fun though everyone thought I had an extra gear.

Unfortunately you need one of Ben's boxes. Not that its unfortunate you have to pay him, but it really is the only way. Sounds like things are settling back down for him and hes back in business.

Is the 1057 still made the same way using 2 cores?

AFAIK yes because it is damn expensive still.

Actually most converters take two cores to build. You could have a trashed turbine and pump on one or a junk stator and piston on the next. The 57 velocity pump was mainly used in the Kodiaks. So we have to find those cores, which isn't easy ( and obviously don't get them back as cores) so we have to continue to find them and purchase as many as possible
