Im pretty sure i dont have a bent rod, but the truck seems to start hard when cold. As in, sounds harsh, and lets out a big nasty white cloud when it fires. Cold as in has not been running for atleast 24 hours. Continues to smoke for about 30 seconds. Cylinder 4 balance rate is out of wack at about 4.5 until the truck warms up a little. Once warmed up a bit it runs fine and the balance rates are perfect .

Well that makes me feel better. Starting to think I have an injector bleeding fuel into the cylinder while it sits. Did it today with me pretty bad at 55 degrees.

I have similar symptoms with my truck. I believe it to be a sticking injector, if I shut the truck off and restart it will go away sometimes. I'm certain it's not a bent rod in my motor.

Except mine would start well in the cold when the glow plugs would turn on. It would run great for 30 seconds or so and then once they turn off it would start to idle rough.

Have to do a compression test to make 100% sure, but what you're talking about is what my truck did when it had it's bent rods.
If it is, welcome to the club. We have cookies. :)

my truck is doing the exact same thing as yours. Please let me know your findings, mine is more along the lines farting and popping too, does it for the first 30 seconds then hazes for 2 minutes. warmed up it is fine. balance rate is also the same as yours and mine are maybe 10,000miles old. I am doing a compression test here shortly as well.

Oooh I don't like the sounds of that. I had the same symptoms and it was just a matter of time before things went downhill...fast. :(

I honestly hope that it's something else much easier to fix. Good luck.

Yall make me sad. I just did a compression test on mine the other night via a amp clamp and lab scope and found out I had low compression on #2. I was hoping for a valve issue but now fear the worst :/

But I guess it could be worse. Mine will be getting LMM rods and de-lipped stock pistons and a torque plate hone, keyed cam and crank and new bearings.

Do a leak down test now, that will tell the story. You are hoping for leakage!!!

If I can find a sweet deal on a set of used ones I will but otherwise it's not worth it for me. My goal is a sweet looking, good running, reliable daily driver. So far it has never let me sit once in over 4 years at over 500 hp to the wheels. I figure if a $300 set of rods will work for my goals why spend $2300?

But if you have a bent rod they didn't necessarily work for your goal did they? Just saying:eek:

great, now I'm worried again. Id be selling this PIG if I found out one of the rods were bent.

You can't blame the truck if you are pushing it to the limit. It is all a gamble you got to be willing to except the risk. God I hope my old lady don't read this :roflmao::roflmao:
