Maybe you booked to the private islands there. Belize the country mainland is very third world. You have the Myan ruins there. They are worth seeing. It really is a experience that most Americans should have and they will have a different prospective on life afterwards.

Been there twice in last two years. It's actually not very third world, to me anyway. Decent Cell service, can rent vehicles, can buy name brand cosmetics in grocery stores or whatever they call them there, everyone pretty much speaks english, but yeah way different than here for sure. What area are you staying in? Awesome down there, now is the best time to go, not to hot or rainy.

They have the world's second largest coral reef so snorkelling is a must. I'm really wanting to make a visit to check that out. I haven't looked to much at prices. What's the average cost for a week stay?

Inland in Belmopan there is the zoo to take in. Fantastic experience there. $50 will get you and your partner a private viewing with Jr their prized leopard. You will get to feed and have a excellent experience with him. Then there is the iguana tour at one of the hotels in town. That was pretty cool too. We ended up getting a private guide that took us all around. Very reasonable rates.

Also any snorkeling you do will have to be done through a tour company. As you won't get a very good experience just going from shore. San Pedro was pretty much a waste of time. We tried wading into the waters and going out to reef but there is so much boat traffic they yell and holler at you to get back to shore. Most of the beach areas are riddled with sanitary waste. I walked out in one area by our hotel and it was a stinking sludge that was a good 2ft deep stepping through it. Needless to say need to take your boat to reefs.

Spent 1 week in Placencia. It was OK but 3rd world beside million dollar homes very expensive to rent vehicles and fuel them. The sand on the beaches was very coarse so you couldn't walk barefoot very far. Some nice local restaurant/pubs though for local foods. We rented a villa on the beach. Someone came in through middle of the night stole $250 and a couple pair of sunglasses. The crook actually scaled the posts on balcony and came in through patio door which was unlocked. This meant they actually walked passed my wife and I while we where asleep. Be very cautious and lock everything. Like I said very 3rd world in my opinion. Would never go back!!

We stayed in Hopkins at Belizean Dreams got there all inclusive package. It was a top notch experience, high quality food, great staff transportation to and from the airport. The sittee river is 5 min from resort and has really good tarpon and snook Fishing. I had an absolute blast tarpon Fishing there..... cannot wait to go back. Also the oranges are ripe rite now. get fresh squeezed orange juice every morning. For me that is the real deal

Yea know what you mean guess I said that because most people have running water and toilets in there house and cell phones now. I mean it's a lot different than parts of africa. I mean the boat I went Fishing on was owned by a native and had a brand new yamaha 4 stroke 60 hp motor and there where others motors that where new there at the marina also. However there is a large range in lifestyle some have plenty and some are really poor. I talked to some of them and they seem to be a happy satisfied people for the most part even if they didn't have much.

They were happy. I didn't see anyone begging. Everyone that needed it wanted something would find some kind of work. Guys were cutting grass with machetes. They were paving/ building roads by mixing concrete in a gas concrete mixer. There wasn't a concrete truck and a bunch of equipment. It was hand manual labor doing the work. Military post were doing roadside checks. There wasn't air conditioning at the restaurant we ate at. There wasn't the luxuries we have here for sure. No going to the drive thru to get you a late night meal!
