Hey all I keep hearing from a couple buddies of mine (ford guys) is how bad the 6.4s are with Spartan or Innovative tunes on em. My one buddy who I've never heard tellba lie, says he watched a Spartan tuned, 5" Straight piped 6.4 dyno 588rwhp. Is that for real? Is that common?? If so why aren't they everywhere on the road? Lol

yeah they do make big power on the spartan tunes, but their still fat pigs and slow at the dragstrip. they are running high 12's with damn near 600hp. d-maxes will do that on 500. plus everyone says " the transmissions dont have to be built." thats bs. ive worked on 2 of them here, one with a spartan 350 tune and one with the h&s blackmax. the spartan tuned one is on his second trans, the second is fried right now slipping 700rpms, his headgaskets are on the way out, and the converter in the other one is shitboxed already too. dont let them fool you, they are no more impressive then a stock turbo efi live tuned duramax

I under stand I'm on 35"s but my built trans efi duramax feels like a turd compared to my buddies 08 6.4 with a intake down pipe and the 310 tune. Hopefully were gonna line them up this weekend at the track. They are heavy though he's 500 pounds heavier than me and I have a lifted lb.

6.4s are monsters with very little work. The trans do usually let go on them in the 600hp or so realm...but as said a Ford needs more hp to keep up with a dmax due to weight. But the 6.4 is a tuner only beast

and the stock rods have seen 4-digit power numbers while racing too. :woott:

and IMO, Ford has one fo the best looking trucks out there. I've just never owned a Ford and don't think I ever will. Blind loyalty to the General I suppose. :D

I can agree with 02bigstrokin , we have a few that have been tuned and stuff out of our shop. they make some good power for awhile , but issues come up. saturday night one got towed in from the strip. trans is cooked . we pulled the dip stick and found all kinds of junk on the first 1/4" ( metal and stuff ) this all @ 35500 miles on it

I am actually looking at buying one after the first of the year for a new work truck. I imagine if a guy keeps it at or under a 250 tune and doesnt take it to the track the tranny should hold right??

I watched a 6.4 with a "new big ass HNS tune...571 hp", exhaust, stock trans, stock tires, hell I didn't see traction bars pull his truck for the first time this weekend. 323 feet!!!! That was 14 feet behind a stock turbo LLY with every air mod possible, efi live, 60% over injectors and a wicked lvl 3 pump. Truck was surprisingly near silent. Sure did yank the hell out of the sled though.

Im doing a full build for a customer right now on his 08 6.4. He had studs, stage II pump, up pipes, ATS stg II trans and tunes, and hit the dyno just over the 600hp mark. He blew a HG and drove it for a while dry so.... Head work, different conv, Elite big twins, SS headers, stage 4 trans, ect. are all in the works... Should be a fun pig to drive. I should have the motor tore down by mid week to see if there is any damage from the HG.

My neighbors have had their bone stock 6.4s replaced. Few other issues with them around here too just stock.

So now my one neighbor has two 6.7s. Both with new engines and one just started on fire the other day. He actually bought a new cummins just because his powerstrokes were broke down soo much.

The reason so many people have issues with the ford transmissions is because they rock hot tunes, but don't tune the transmission either correctly or at all. Like i say all the time, every truck is different and between the three motors the duramax, powerstroke, and cummins all have their own glitches, but i am a fan of the 6.4's, they sound nice as hell along with looking real sharp.

I know a guy who is a vendor on another site who wanted a 6.4 just to see it's "potential". He put a Spartan tune on it and fried the converter within 6 months. He ran it on the 310 and was cutting mid-13s with it until he fried the converter. I tried and tried to get him to race my truck at a local event and he chickened out. It is impressive was they can be tuned for in stock form, but as well known and previously mentioned, they are fat pigs! They need all that tuning just to think about keeping up. Good luck!

The fords are going to do better than the chevys at the truck pull because they are heavier. More weight=better traction

Lol that is why they have weight classes:thumb:

Equal weight does not mean equal traction. For example let's just say a crew cab short bed duramax weighs the same as an extended cab shortbed superduty, the same amount of weight is on a shorter frame which makes it a much more equal weight distribution.

thats why they make weight bars.

Chevy=less gross which equals more moveable weight. End result, lots of weights can be hung on the front, for more optimal results.
