The bottom valve cover uses a coated metal gasket. I've reused them several times with no leaks. I always check to make sure they don't have any gouges or kinks in them though. There is really no need to remove the upper part of the valve cover if you are going to pull the lower valve cover as well.

while on the subject of valve covers. I wanted to swap out my valve cover bolts for the ARP stainless, but they are $175. any better options out there?

I bought a bunch of solid chrome bolts from the hardware store...
When it was all said and done I probably would've been better off just getting the ARP kit
LMAO

I did also buy and use a chrome lock washer on every bolt for the lower valve cover tho...
;)

well I went ahead an ordered the ARP stainless bolt kit. came last night and it sure does look pretty.

my plans for the truck next week:
check/set valves
installed powdercoated valve covers
polish fuel lines
oh ya, and head studs. gonna bite the bullet and attempt to do em one at a time.

Hopefully I can get the above done in 3-4 days.

How are you planning on polishing the fuel lines? I thought about doing that but figured if I go through the galvanized coating then I'd have to go all the way down to raw metal, and that's going to corrode pretty quickly.

I have a bench mount buffer I was hoping to buff them out with. haven't really looked at them much thought. I could always powdercoat them chrome too. but afraid it would just chip off

I buffed mine too, I have a polish that supposedly coats the polished metal in a polymer type clear coat. I was thinking of just spraying clear on them

Also did head studs and set the valves. I know I've read ppl say that Dmax valves never need adjusted but let me say that at 206k miles I had some way out of adjustment. Some were at 23 thou.

I disagree. I say adjust them every time you're in there. Probably runs a bit quieter now?
