So Cal.
Is this something PPE did?

No we did not tap the pan, it was done by someone else...

What the **** is it green for?
Its the Dye used to find where the oil leak was coming from. Thank goodness it had a leak or this would not have been found till more damage was done!!!
If you and I did not have bad luck we would not have any with these trucks:rolleyes::( Hang in there man, your getting close:thumb:
He's very close!!!
:mad:unfucckin believeable

Ur telling me...

Matt,

Your truck is done come pick it up!!!! Leak is fixed, oil is changed and filter replaced... The old filter looks good (when we cut it apart)..:thumb:

For the love of gawd Matt, go get in your truck and beat this piss out of it all the way home and remind it who is the owner here, put the truck in it's place and have fun.

I hope you can put this all behind you, I know you have and everyone else on here have learned alot from this and now it should be all worth it

Those would be shavings from when the twins turbo drain was drilled - with the pan still on the truck. The pan wasnt removed, .

Matt do you have any idea what is involved in removing the upper oil pan??? You're saying it as if "he was just being a lazy idiot, anyone else would have pulled the oil pan to drill it"

Do you know how many people drill their oil pans for twins with the oil pans still in place and never have a problem????

And finally, for anyone having a heart attack about the aluminum (read: soft/not gonna wreck anything) metal shavings. Are you guys all forgetting these engines have OIL FILTERS?

Are you forgeting that an oil filter has a limit Ben??? And you honestly think aluminum won't hurt anything?? I've seen a low rpm big block have it's bearings destroyed from alum shavings. I don't know if your little pissing match with Simon has jadded you or somthing but your all knowing attitude is getting pretty old.

Ben,

You feeling ok lately???

Who said the upper pan needs to be removed??? Anytime we have drilled the the pan we remove the LOWER pan and remove any drill/tap shaving from the engine. Make sense???

If I remember correctly the oil filter is AFTER the oil pump. Yes the oil pump has steel gears but the housing is aluminmum. Did it cause damage? I dont know!

The way I read your post it seems like you are condoning what has happened? Is this true? Are you NOT seeing a pattern here?

Better yet bring YOUR truck by the shop and I will put a handfull of "soft/not gonna wreck anything/Aluminum" in your oil filler tube. I wont even charge you...:roflmao:

nooo no Im not in any way condoning what happened. :)

I appologize if my posts were misunderstood, I didnt intend them to read the way they did.

I mainly said that to help matt feel better and not lose sleep over it...its true, everyone who installs twins (ok, except PPE apparently) just drills the upper pan and calls it good, and I have never heard of any problems with it being done that way.

Personally I would not go through the trouble to do that, to drop the lower pan. If someone specifically wants to pay me an extra 2 hrs of labor to drop the pan and clean it out, fine, ill do it, but Im not going to feed them a line of BS and say "you need this otherwise you'll ruin the engine" when honestly I dont believe its necessary.

yes...everyone does! ;)

Put some thick grease on the drill bit/tap and have at it...

If the shavings make it past the pickup screen (GM actually changed the mesh/screen size several times along production), they are most likely going to be suspended in the oil because they are super thin and very small, and theyre going to go right through the oil pump, and right into the filter and be stopped there...

Drill the pan, drive it for a day, and change the oil/filter...and you're good to go.

I would say Dan's method with removing the lower pan is the Ideal/better way. But since most of us dont do it that way, I agree with ben's method of using some grease on the drill bit, I also had my buddy hold a shop vac near the pan while I was drilling catching any pieces the drill bit/grease did not pick-up or flung off. Either way I believe Skidmax's truck will not have any ill effects from the shavings sittting in the pan especially since the filter checked out fine and was not clogged.

That's crazy but glad it's finally done now!! Hopefully matt gets several miles of fun out of it before needing anything more than regular maintenance!!

in the two upper pans i have drilled and tapped for a turbo drain; i used a 90* drill ,overfilled a quart or two, and used a shop vac to suck out the shavings / extra oil. neither motor had any bearing or oil pump problems.

I always remove the lower pan before drilling for a turbo drain. Not doing that is just plain lazy. I don't care how you justify it, metal shavings in your engine are not a good thing.
