I am moving to Fairbanks in April and was wondering if there was anyone from around there?
Yes there are some guys on here and on the DP from the Fairbanks area. Your truck isn't going to like those winters. I went to college in Bareflanks. Playboy named the U of Alaska as having the uglest coeds of any college in the country. You can always tell when a Bareflanks girl has a hot date because she braids her arm pits and wears her best pair of bunny boots. If you don't know what bunny boots are you will. Colder than a well diggers ass in the winter and hot and buggy in the summer. Worst water in the world. Didn't leave a ****ing thing in Bareflanks. Have fun.
I know what bunny boots are I'm born and raise on the Kenai Peninsula..man I miss Alaska wish the USMC had a base up there
I'm with you on the Kenai, great part of the state, just too damn many cheechakos in the summer an only one road. There are so damn many rv's parked out on the Homer spit sometimes it's a wonder it doesn't sink. Lived in Soldotna for a few years in the late 70's. Kenai River only had a few boats fishing on it then, even during July, now it is a zoo. Check out thes pictures of the mouth of the Kenai River when they open dipnet fishing for red salmon. ****ing zoo.
I spent 25 years in Alaska and retired from there. I was a fishery biologist for the Alaska Dept of Fish & Game for over 20 years. Alaska is a great place, but a place for young people. Winters are long and dark. I didn't mind the cold so much, but I really did get tired of the dark. Summer time you are going almost 24 hours a day because it never get very dark. If you are not an outdoor kind of guy the alternative is drinking, need a good liver to survive. If you get to Anchorage stop at Darwin's Theory Bar. My good friend Darwin Beiwer owns it and has since 1981. They serve lots of red hots there, shot of cinnamon schnapps with a double dash of Tabasco sauce in it. A mandatory evil if you go in the place. There is a drag strip out in the valley near Palmer or use to be. Probably a few diesel there as well. Bought my first diesel in Alaska, a 1990 Chev 6.2. You talk about a mother to start in the winter, and Anchorage isn't even that cold. It would take about 10 minutes of solid cranking to get it to fire. Laid down a smoke screen a Sigma pumped 12 valve would be proud of.
Alaska is a wonderful place, but not many roads so everyone is jammed on what there are. To really see it you need to have or have access to one or more of the following, first class off road equipment, a plane and a good boat, usually partners with good friends helps too.
This place Ken??:thumb:
Don't let Ken scare ya, Alaska was awesome this past summer and I cant wait to go back. Kenai is where we did most of our fishing and a couple excursions to good time Charlies Soldotna was OK, theres a couple cool brewery's there. We only spent 1 night in Anchorage but I think we hit Dam near every bar and adult entertainment club there, Made for one of the longest flights of my life home the following morning The girls in general were not half bad either
