You could pick up a bow hunting mag. There is some good stuff in them. I usually learn a little everytime I look through one. They have them at most book stores.

Haha gotta have that bacon on there. Ive been thinkin about seein if i could get a diesel get together and go down there and shoot some quail and have a big cookout and shit. Itd be pretty fun. I bet you would like it out there, i need some positive reinforcement for gettin my dad to get a dmax and drop that stupid gas v10 f250 he has. That thing is a turd
I guided deer hunts out in west Texas for a bunch of years, not quite as far west as Alpine but probably similar country. Those were good times.

We have one out near alpine thats around 7000 acres and one near ft mckavett thats around 5000 acres.
We guide bowhunts out at the one near ft mckaett. Weve killed some pretty good deer, i love it out there. We go dove hunitng out there every year and its a blast.

If you do a get-together, let me know! For some good hunting and hanging out, I'll drive to TX!! Hell, I'm due for a frickin' vacation anyways!

I mean I was just thinkin about it, but the more I think about it the better it sounds. Itd be badass to get some dmaxes out there and chill out and coook some food. Ill see when i have some time off from school and look around to see if anyone else would be interested.

Hell yeah, let us know! Realistically, I need a couple weeks notice and I can probably bail out for the better part of a week. I know TX is a big-ass state, but I've done LA to El Paso in about 11hrs pulling a trailer.

I guided on the Hayre Ranch in Pecos & Terrill counties, qbout 100,000 acres the first couple years but sold part of it the last couple years I was there, probably couldnt call what I did as guiding, it was more like baby sitting :baby:

If he is going to be shooting at small animals chances are he will have to move around quite a bit. The whisker bisket should hold the arrow in place a little better, at least in my experience they do. Best bet is to go to that archery shop and figure out what you like best!

Let us know what you get.

Just my opinion, but if he plans on doing a stalk instead of a blind or stand then I would suggest a traditional bow. I have both a custom made Hoyt compound and a special made Bob Lee long bow. I only use the compound when I am in a blind or tree stand. With the long bow I use my index finger to hold the arrow in place while stalking my dinner.

Just to give you an idea......

I shoot open class 3d out to 55 yds, as well as hunt everything from squirrels, rabbits, and groundhogs, up to turkey and of course deer with the exact setup I listed. I also shot numerous chipmunks and even a field mouse while practicing.

At rest my arrow lays on the shelf in a cradle that I cover with my finger like was mentioned about a traditional setup shot off the shelf.

I too shoot traditional, more to keep the instinctive skills sharp, than hunting purposes. I have two classic Bear recurves, Grayling bows. Traditionals are easy to "snap shoot", because they don't have to be at full draw to be released, which is good for flying targets and bowfishing. Although I have shot a few clay birds in flight with my compound, it was just for fun and not with great success :D

Ok, how bizarre is this:

Just for kicks, I google "archery" and "Thousand Oaks" (the city I live in). One of the first results is a local archery club with the address given as a street in my freakin' neighborhood. Actually, it's the cross-street my house is on. So I google-earth it and I could literally walk out my front door, throw a beer bottle and hit this dude's house. I'll probably walk over tomorrow and knock on the door instead, but you get the idea. Small world huh?

Haha, it can be a small world at times......that would be a good person/group to talk to and get you introduced to the sport.

Some of the most well-known and accomplished bowhunters are from CA - Chuck Adams (first bowhunter to take all 28 North American big game spcies), Saxton Pope, and Art Young (Pope & Young Club).

Bowhunting trivia of the day :D

I dont have a ton of bow experience but I have shot many different brands and I ended up buying a Hoyt XT1000 cam and a half. It is an awsome bow in my opinion. Arrow selection is very important, I shoot easton 3-39/440 superlite alum./carbon/composite arrows. Good luck finding what you want

Thought some of the archers here would like these pics.

Target #15 pro class on the indoor 3d course at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show last week.......bedded elk, 55 yrds up into the stands.

First pic is from the target looking down to the shooting line (tan/brown line in front of the fence :cool2:)
Second pic is my arrow in the target (12 ring) not too bad for hunting pins.

Yes, it is a very cool course...3rd year I have shot it.

That show is always mobbed....I live about an hour away so I go in the evening through the week. Where you lucky enough to meet Lee and Tiffany Lakosky?

I had a friend of mine that guided fly fishing in AK for a year or two, never done it myself though. If you are fishing a creek/river watch out for the Grizzlies, they completely gorge themselves on salmon during the spawn, so you have to fight them for fish at times, and they fall asleep on the trail. Also the permafrost can be a rip that time of year, like walking on jello.

Have fun..that would be awesome to see AK.

Did not meet tiffany:( As far as fighting the grizz for salmon, I don't think so, I forfeit;):D I did a bear hunt In B.C. two years ago that was awesome!! Harrisburgh is a 4hr hike for me so It makes for a long day down and back but it was worth it and the D-Max represented itself well in 2 races I encouraged On RT-81:D

I used to go to AK every year near the end of August for Silver Salmon. There as a place outside Dillingham my Dad, brother and I went to, but they shut it down a few years back and we haven't made the time to figure out another trip. Silvers on fly or lightweight spinning tackle are a real handful! Plus, being able to fish in daylight until 1am is just badass. :D
