I've been doing way to much reading and research on this. I'm looking into a 468 bbc on E85. The fuel supports high compression ratio and lots of power. definitely wont have 1000 horse this year but at least I have something to shoot for. I've found a few 73-98 chevy's with big blocks and 4 speeds just begging to be turned into a puller

dont know but 5.3 ls motors are cheap and can make serious hp on stock motor with some ls6 parts cam valves, etc or a 6.0 build JMHO :thumb:

not everyone wants 20,000 wrapped up in a truck that can't even plow snow ;)

I think a cammed big block will be just fine for me. I can get 1200 horse billet rods for a big block chevy for 350.00 duramax rods are 2400.00

i understand ben, it may be cheaper to get started with a gasser, but i think it might be cheaper in the long run to be competitive with a diesel. competitive= not cheap either way.

Only thing else I have to add is to GET WHAT YOU WANT! Don't settle for less or something different than what you really want. If you do, you'll never really be satisfied with it and always want what you really wanted to begin with and will end up wasting your money on an intermediate purchase before making the purchase on what you really want.

That's why mine has taken for-ev-er!! Well, that, and an extremely low budget like I said earlier. But I have been tempted sooooo many times to buy a cummins and 4500 and literally bolt it in and go. Or even a 350 just to get it mobile. Have stuck to my guns though as I knew if I veered off, I'd always have that little thought in the back of my mind wishing I had of done this or that or whatever.

That's the last two pennies I have.

Once you start replacing all of the drive train to get it to hold up it is not much different than building a diesel. Pro Fab transfer case kit is $1400 and the three speed kit for the trans is $2200. That more than makes up for the rods. None of it is cheap.

sorry, i was refering to the motor. it may or may not be more to build a competitive 480 motor. isp's president was telling me that he thought the diesels should be handicaped becuase the knows how much money is in one of the gasser motors and he thought it was a lot. he is also one of the biggest complainers of the diesels in the superstock class he pulls in.

This may be dumb. But if ur only aloud cast heads, how is a duramax even an option? Maybe I missed something here?

it was ruled alright because they are oem. there is no aftermarket option yet.

so where is the cut off horsepower wise to not need this? Which clutch are people using for the sm465? I've been studying the Summit catalog getting a parts list together. I'm not looking to be a front runner. Not yet anyways.

I just want to have some fun pulling in a truck that isnt my daily driver. I'm also tired of being in the stock classes and pulling last every night.

Dual disk McCleod clutch.

Depends on how the gearing is setup. Low gears in the axles and a cut third gear with stock transfer and you can get away with probably around 750hp or so.

Regular 4.10 gears and a stock second gear and you will break the transfer case around the 650hp mark roughly.

Now if the truck bounces or doesn't run smooth and those numbers get thrown out the window.

and even built to the hilt, virtually NONE of the driveline in the gasser will work if you ever decide to convert it to a diesel puller.

Ditch the gasser idea! You can get a lb7 so much cheaper and throw in a trans kit and turbo and lift pump run 600hp roughly. It should last a season and wont need all this other BS. I feel a 600hp diesel should compete with a 750-800hp gasser because they make so much more torque. Remember i know nothing about pulling and this is my Opinion. I just saw a lb7 sell on ebay running 4wd reg. cab for 6,600.00 with 210,00 miles on it. So for about 10-12k you would of had a 600hp puller setup???

Also your resale value is ALWAYS way higher on a diesel than some old chevy with a big block. You can always make the truck streetable again and get most your money back out of it. IMO building a gas puller is throwing money out the window, but building a dmax would always resale

Buy an old beater dmax 4wd, put a k31 and a fass pump on it and beat on it and have fun.

Just so happens I know where to get a lightly used k31 turbo. It's all up to if I can find a truck cheap enough. Having a baby now really shrinks the budget. Mossy is really pushing me towards a dmax anyways.
