If you just had it open, it's possible to have installed a bearing improperly. Hearing it in certain gears rules out the converter and pump by my thinking, however I have been wrong before, curious to see what you find, keep us updated.

Well me and two of my buddies that build Allison's all the time went through it because I was scared of putting a bearing in wrong. Lol. And we had another trans right next to mine as we took them apart so That I knew how to put everything back together right. That's why I don't think it's a bearing. I think it might be the something with the pump being it was whining before this.

Why would the converter care if it was going into 4th gear and start making noise? Why would the pump care?If you and your buddies are that experienced; why would you need another trans to compare position of torringtons?
What if the trans you used for comparison was wrong?

I was going to leave it alone but you said it. The pump isn't going to decide hey it's the 3/4 shift lets makes make noise and neither is the converter. From your description I honestly have no idea what the issue is but I can think of quite a few things it isn't.

Does it look like I know??? If I knew I wouldn't be on here asking! And if the trans I was looking at was wrong then the factory must have screwed up... The other trans was just there to get built and I was just looking at it while they tore it down. They knew which way everything went. Why are you asking so many questions when you are supposed to be the expert?

Well I don't know much about a transmission so I'm just saying what I hear and am seeing when it makes noise. I know it's coming from the bell housing area.

I am no expert when you built it. I have no idea what you did or didn't do. I ask these questions because you claim everything is correct, yet it makes noise.
Your attitude seems to be that you did everything right, and your buddies concurred and it doesn't work. You have expert help at hand.

Noise travels a lot in a trans. don't count on it being in the front.

Ok but even before we went through it, it had started to make the whining noise a few weeks before. And if it was a Torrington bearing wouldn't it make the noise the whole time in every gear?

Negative. Many of the torringtons are stationary during certain gears. The torringtons seperate the planetarys and shafts from each other during operation. When in gear not all shafts pr planetarys rotate against each other, but can be locked to each other from the clutch pack operation. So no, they can definately come and go, and change sound during operation as the RPM's and gears change. I would venture to say a bearing in one of your planetarys has failed since your confident all your torringtons were good. Those would be the only bearings you couldn't have inspected during a rebuild.

The planet pinion bearings rarely make noise and when they do they growl most times. The Torrington bearings should always be snapped open for inspection as that's the only way you will see if they are starting to go bad.
