I can make a transbrake for the Allison 5 & 6 speed transmissions.

1. Would you buy it?

2. Would you want it to work in just first or mulitple ranges?

3. Are they legal where you drag race/sled pull?

Thanks,

Brayden

I'll be testing it next week :coolspot:

I would be afraid of launching a 6500+ lb truck off a trans brake. Seems like a good recipe for killing drivelines and axles.

I know the ones in the dodges tend to break a ton of parts. I'd still be willing to test one.

Forgive my ignorance, but does it still allow one to build pressure/boost or is it like a free rev. in park or neutral and not really "pushing" on anything to have resistance to build boost?

Seems sweet though!! You sure have your hand in some cool options for the dmax! Kudos for that!

I don't drag race so I have little experience, but have heard of many members doing a second gear launch as they get up in the power range. I'm thinking those who need and/or would benefit from a transbrake would prefer it to start in second gear....... as that is what they are doing anyways.

I could be off, just going from what I've read on the forums.

Not exactly, 2nd gear launches are basically done on a case by case basis. Some trucks benefit where others do not at all. 2nd gear launching is also def. harder on parts.

Brayden - You won't be the first to build a transbrake for the Allison. The late Joe Webb (Suncoast) developed and had one in Suncoast's Duramax shop truck back in 2004. Joe said it would be a trans-BREAK so he shelved the project.

I believe that a transbrake wouldn't be "legal" in some classes but wouldn't be illegal unless one got caught. Also there are safety requirements that SHOULD be met like shields, or trans blankets to contain possible debris. I personally believe the Allison might not be up to the task to perform with a transbrake for long.:):)

Trans brakes usually lock the trans in 1st and reverse so it'll hold you back, let you build boost until you hit the button or switch to release reverse.

I think it would be a cool idea for the Allison. It does make me wonder how it will be on hard parts but that's what testing is for. Good luck! :thumb:

What I found out about "legal" for ProStreet:

It depends on who you are as to what is legal. If the right person runs one, it will be legalized after the fact, or at the track. So the first step is to figure out who the right person is, then get them to run it.

Things like current registration, street legal equipment, hood stacks, 1/8th mile only, qualifying, towing to the line, electronic launch control, truck transmission-only, weight restrictions, etc, are good examples. I imagine there are more as well. But if the wrong person runs it, it might stay banned.

But they usually do the 2nd gear start because they can't build enough boost in 1st before pushing through the brakes. If this allows one to lock it in 1st AND still build boost up to a desirable # for where they want to launch at, then they wouldn't have to start in 2nd anymore. Usually, as long as the shifts are clicking off like they are supposed to and not a big defuel on the 1-2 shift like some have, they'd be faster if they could leave as hard in 1st as they were when launching in 2nd because they'll get going quicker with the lower gear. Or at least that's how I figure it. Could be way off base and that wouldn't surprise me. :thumb:

We cannot lock in 1st gear... a redesign of the valve body would be needed..... LOTS of money. Also locking in 1st gear would be sort of unnesecary as our first gear is extremely quick.

I remember discussing it with Joe Webb back then and I told him it would break. He finaly agreed.

I dont think he acually means "locking" in first gear, i think he means the truck not sliding through the brakes.

I'm confused...If a truck runs quicker launching in 1st gear, why would locking it in 1st be unneccesary?

I was always under the impression that locking the converter under 25mph or close to it was not needed. I also remember that even grounding the F trim solenoid you still cannot lockup in 1st without redesigning the Valve Body.
