Just the opposite Ben. It has to do with the design of the wheel. It's all about leverage and the 83mm doesn't do a good job of transferring the energy like the 87mm does. Sit the two wheels next to each other and it becomes obvious. Even on stock injectors the 87mm runs circles around the 83mm.

Guys thought i was nuts a few years ago for saying an 87 spools quicker and drives better on the dmax. Its all about surface area to grab the air. I think an 87 in a 1.0 is perfect.

Funny this came up. I have Henry pricing me a rebuild on my tct that got destroyed on the turbine side due to engine parts making there way in there. Anyway he's also pricing what an upgrade to an 87mm turbine would cost for me also. So the 87 fits right where an 83 was? No Machining or new housing? Mines a 75/83/1.10 t4

Pm me what henry quoted you if you don't mind. I'd like to compare what my guy is charging.

No personal experience here. But a 92mm turbine is said to flow not much more than a 87, but be super lazy and lethargic to spool. A sled puller buddy of mine, not a duramax, went from an 87 to a 92 and couldnt even begin to get it to light.
An 87 seems to be a do-it-all turbine for near stock fuel systems all the way up close to 1--- rwhp.

The 92mm is an over grown version of the 83mm, that's why it sucks compared to the 87mm. It's the design of the 87mm that makes it is much better guys. Lay the two of them next to each other on the bench and see the difference. Hell, I do it for you on Monday so you can see it here.

I think it helps that the 87mm turbine wheel is about 25 years newer technology. I have been told it flows close to the 96 wheel (but lacks the torque to drive the larger compressor wheel to full speed ie 76mm and up). It also spools up like an 83mm in my opinion. I have had this on my personal truck for over 2 years and i really like it.

So i called my turbo shop just barely, the main turbo guy is out for the week on vacation so one of the other guys was helping me, I asked him for a price on an 87mm turbine and either machine my current housing or just buying a new housing..he looked for a minute and said he couldn't find a part number for the 87mm turbine and that borg must not be selling them anymore??

Is he mistaken or what?

Mark, would you mind pm'ing me a price on an 87mm turbine and a price on a t4 turbine housing setup for an 87mm turbine in either a .90ar or a 1.0ar.

If I'm wanting to try and push 1000 horse fuel only out of this s480, would the 1.0 be the better option? How is spool up with the 1.0 vs the .90?

I forgot to post it but since you were asking and others may look in this thread for the answer I have easily done over 820 rwhp on multiple 75/83/.90 turbos.

I've done 754 horse on my 72/83/.90 but was to scared to turn it up anymore for fear of engine damage. I then added the 80mm compressor and was planning on seeing what that turbo would do but I figured I'm putting the money into my build to do it right, I may as well have a properly set up turbo too. I ordered an 87mm turbine and 1.0 housing from Mark yesterday. 80/87/1.0 should meet my 1000 hp goal no problem.

Here is the difference in the 83mm turbine and 87mm turbines. Kind of hard to see the 83 all covered in soot. The blades are significantly taller on the 87 and also they are curved vs straight on the 83.
