Im lookin at selling some vehicals and buying one for hunting and camping and stuff and I am looking for some insight on this motor the good the bad what kind of miles are they getting out of them what kind of milage should I stay away from any comon problems that kind of stuff.
Maybe a good forum to check out on it. I did look up a couple forums but didnt see much on them.
Thanks for any input.

Get a Super Chevy and Chevy High Performance mags printed by Sourcelink who puts out Diesel Power they have good articles on those 8.1s with a Comp cam and headers with many other add ons to make power. The tranny is what might be the limiting deal on what power you want. Can't attest to tranny on that combo but pull a junk motor for a few bucks.

Why not use a Dmax?

I've had 2 2500hd ecsb 8.1 alison 4x4's(01&04). Beasts to say the least as far as gas engines go. I never had an issue with either tuck. Mine both had 3:73 gears and never got much better than 10 mpg in town but that was expected. I wouldnt worry about the Allison at all behind the bigblock....They don't have as much torque as the Dmax. IMO stock for stock the 8.1 is alot more fun to drive and would whoop on a dmax...stock for stock I said. I had my 04 tuned by Westers with a CAI, Stainless Works long tube 1 7/8 headers and 3 inch exhaust...love my dmax, but sometimes wish i would've kept that 04. With some head work and a cam they could be alot more fun.

It did use between 1/2 to a quart of oil between changes. Both of mine did this since the day I bought them new. Otherwise other common problems to all classic body HD trucks like the Intermediate Steering shaft, pitman Idler arm wear, t-case pump rub etc.. What year and price range are you looking at? I beleive the 06 only had the 6 speed Allison with manual mode tap shift...I would assume this would help mileage maybe slightly over the 5 speeds used in 01-05.

I have a buddy with an 02 clean truck with 160,000 on it hes had it for five years problem free he told me 8000 but im thinkin I can sneek it for 6-7. There are aslo a few others around for sale with 170-180,000 from 7200 - 9000. Really only lookin to get a newer truck for huntin dunes trips and a few snowmobile trips. My 88 tpi BB is starting to get pretty rough.
Prob would tune it and keep the rest stock at least thats what I am telling muself.

Crew cab short bed. Six speed rocks but the motor runnings the gears quick. The motor has alittle higher redline then the dmax but 410s make up for that. Truck in 4low first gear feels like it can pull anything.

Yea, I deliver boats all over the country. The LBZ is a great 2 wheel drive hauler while the 8.1 should be a great back-up and its getting its new blizzard plow next month.:woott: Not alot of boats moving between nov. and march.
