:( Sad news Pat. Man, the automotive industry has been taking a huge turn for the worse and this certainly doesn't help. Hope someone is smart enough to keep up with the V8's in the aftermarket as it seems V8's may be on their way out completely.

I like that engine. I've had a few, dad still currently has one. Good motor IMO. But, what about the marine industry? A lot of boats are powered by the 8.1.

With diesels being more and more popular now, and with the 6.0L still on the table the 8.1L just isn't needed. I see it being used in a minor capacity or being outright stopped and GM will just re-tool it later to make it better when they have better finances.

The 6.0L can never take the 8.1's place.

My cousin has a 2007.5 with 6.0 and 6L90E He pulls his Jeep up hill in second gear the 8.1 would do it in 4 th or 5th

Also with the duramax going to be a 10k option people will start to miss the bigblock

Dodge dropped their big block, Ford's big block is a SOHC V-10 that makes 362HP. Even though the Ford gas V-10 is only a $700 option versus the $8000 Powerstroke option which only pushes 350HP, the Powerstroke outsells the V-10 several times over. For Ford Super-Duties, first choice is the Powerstroke, second is the 300HP V8, and last is the V10, even though it's not much more money.

Ford will probably retire their Big Block as well, at least from the pickup line. Not sure when, because at least the Ford is a fairly modern design, and it's based on their V8, which it shares geometry and parts with. It's a 5.4 with two added cylinders, so it's not a big expense to keep it in production.

Diesels killed the big blocks when the HP hit 300. Better fuel range, better tow platform, lower fuel bills.

Actually Ford is killing the V10 with the new 6.2 400hp motor they are coming out with.

The Ford V10 was always a turd though it had the same high winding properties of a small block V8

A 6.0 LQ9 Will outpull a 2 Valve Ford V10 I know from experience.

Not with more and more diesel incentives that could be coming out, BMW is already offering an incentive to buy diesel from them.

He gets 8MPG which a 8.1 would do the same if not better

I am all for the Diesel but the 8.1 was a $900 dollar option you would have to be a fool to buy the 6.0 over the 8.1

of course back then the Duramax was a 3k Option Right now it is a 7k option with 2010 emmissions it will be a 10k option

Dad averages about 12 or better with his 8.1. We have a 6.0 also, it's not much better. I would take the 8.1 over the 6.0 any day.

I priced a 2010 duramax right around the time I sold my lbz and bought this lb7. All rebates, incentives and other bs with their red tag sale price was $46,900 and no leather so it wasn't fully loaded. At first I thought it was a miss print and seen that it was a 2010 and not an 09. No thanks!
I guy that works for us has spit out 2 spark plugs on his v-10 ford and the threads came out with the plugs.
I really liked the 8.1 in the 3/4 ton Suburbans.
