Well oven cleaner from the 99 cent store did the trick....going to rattle can the motor tomorrow and start ordering parts. Still undecided on carb...but the rest of the build is 60201 Lunati cam and lifters, true roller timing set, weiand stealth intake, some headers and exhaust. Other than that stock 454 with a 4 speed and 3.73s...I was thinking a 750 Double Pumper or a 770 Vac Sec and that's what Holley recommends but a buddy says run a 670 VS or 650 DP...what do you all think?

if u can afford the gas a 750 double pump is ur best bet, it will make the most power, that 454 needs more than that lil 650:D

Haha..thought about the double pumper but for drivability I went with what is listed above.

Plan is to get the motor painted and put back together then toss it in the truck and enjoy the nice torquey little beast. Then the money fun starts for a mud drag truck or a nice 67-72 shortbed 2wd street truck for when I get back to AK :D

I'm no Picasso but slapped the first coat of Chevy Orange on it tonight..don't worry bout those valve covers it has chrome finned ones going on it. It'll get at least another coat or two and the pulley's are getting painted gloss black. Nothing spectacular or out of this world but good enough for me!

Thanks...once the motor is complete and dropped in then the interior begins haha and so it snowballs into a restored truck

Agreed. I have a '76 Chevy short box 2wd with a 383 stroker that I had a 750 Holley in just like you are going to put on your motor. I thought it would be better b/c of more cfm. That lasted for about an hour and switched back to my dual feed double pumper 650 Holley b/c there was no comparison. You are starving that motor with that carb.

My theory (at least with my truck) is I don't drive it for fule milage. I drive it for fun. More power = more fun. :D

Haha that's true and I ended up going with a 750 vacuum secondary...if that's not enough I can always step up to a double pumper. It is a daily driver though and I decided to go with what I know and run a vacuum carb. If I could have found a Predator cheaper I would have tried that. Nothing wrong with double pumpers and the truck I'm building next will have one.

I pulled the balancer and intake and must say the pushrods/intake runners and what not look GREAT! And they appear to be the larger pushrods which makes sense seeing as how it's a early 70s motorhome motor.

Stocked up on beer and got a few buddies and got a TON done on the motor. Got the cam/lifters in, true roller timing set on, intake installed and a nice new set of freeze plugs in. Basically all that's left is valve covers, carb, water pump and pulleys then drop it in. Getting excited....probably will spend some family time so it will most likely get dropped in next weekend but a lot closer than yesterday.

Young lady in third pic looks thrilled doing her nails while the guys "do their thang". LOL Kudos to her tho for sucking it up & sacrificing her own boredom & support her guys hobbies in order to spend some time with him.

Engine is coming together nicely!

Haha..that's the truth. didn't even realize she was in the background until now. She's a trooper and hung out with us most of the night last night while we worked on it. That was just the end of the night and everyone was ready to be done haha. Thanks...planning to have it finished up sometime soon

Well that didn't go as planned...need help

So got the inital timing set to 12* advanced and that's where it wanted to start/idle with the rockers loose. The moment you get close to about 1/8" of play in the rockers as you slowly tighten them it first starts having blowby then starts sputtering and dies. Pulled a pushrod and checked and the lifters are hydraulic plus they still bleed off as they should. I'm just beyond frustrated and it's now interfering with my work...I need to have the truck driveable ASAP....whether that means getting this cam to work or dropping the stock cam back in it doesn't matter. I just can't seem to find reasonably priced lifters since I mixed up the stockers.

Yeah...buddy went to test drive it and it ran fine last night just didn't want to idle in gear so he was working on it and went to test drive it...got about 500 yards from the house and smelled fuel, pulled over and it was on fire. just glad he's okay...burnt the motor, under the dash, and the windshield...pretty sure the insurance is going to total it if they cover him driving it since I had Comp but as of now I'm out for the cost of the truck, the parts, all my time and truckless...if anyone knows of a good diesel for sale for cheap doubtful but let me know or a 4wd gasser
