I will ask him to monitor it and get some feedback.
If your bro lives in Nevada though, it may not be quite the same. My brother lives in the mountainous Okanagan Valley and has a heavy left foot more often than not!

I can't see it being more than a 1 or 2mpg difference though.

Since when does a heavy left foot effect milage? Maybe I missed something:confused:

Right now, he's looking to keep it a dd, get some decent mileage and have enough juice to haul a 4k trailer. Magnaflow and some form of tuner he is looking at right now, wants to keep $$$ as tight as possible since he's looking at buying a house soon.

I told him about EFI, jusst dont know anybody in his area that has one a nd knows how to tune a gasser.

edit: do K&N have the same aborted breath baiting on a gasser as they do in a diesel?? I know turbo vehicles need a little better filtration than a non turbo, but running a K&N isn't gonna be that big a deal will it??

Old Z71 had 180K on the 5.3 when I pulled it for my 418, looked perfect, I wouldnt think twice about using a K&N drop in again regardless of what all the test crap shows.

The custom tuners will send him a new PCM that he will swap out and send his original back. They dont have to hook up a cable to the OBII port.

The exhaust isnt going to do much of anything without opening the airway up before the stock exhaust. All an aftermarket exhaust with just a tune will do is make your truck louder, and a grand total of MAYBE 5hp. You need some more air moving through the motor before real gains will be realized from an exhaust system.

x 10 for a Custom Tune, good exhaust and a good CAI.

Then add a shift kit/billet servos, TQ verter as funds allow,

Then do a cam /spring swap. Dont have to go to aggressive, I ran a Comp cams 212/218 with Z06 valve springs and it ran like a raped ape, i was also turboed, but cam ran great and had a nice lope even with out the Turbo.

Custom tuning is where its at, off the shelf tuners dont cut it.

Cody (1slow01Z71) has been there too, do like he said and check out performancetrucks.net, lots of " Bolt on" guys going low 12's w/o forced induction.

Thats what my brother wants to do as well. Level it out with 33's.

If you wouldn't mind, could you find out what kind of mileage he sees after doing the lift??

Thanks

So my brother said his mileage was almost the same +/- 1mpg. Around 16 mpg city/highway combined. Not a big change except it looks better now!

Sweet. Thx. Talked to him yesterday, he said he's avg'ing about 18, unloaded on stock wheels/tires right now. hopefully a tuner and pipe will help compensate for his level/wheel/tire setup once those go on.

Your brothers truck looks way better sitting like that.

Figured i'd revive instead of a new thread.

Truck tosses a p0174 code occasionally. When its cold, it idles rough, sometimes dies and sputters a bit till it warms up. Runs fine then. Comes back with "p0174 Bank 1 running lean"

Ive heard of intake sealing issues with these motors and also the occasional MAF failing. Anything else he should look at?? 02 sensor cause this?? I already had him check for a vacuum leaks, nothing there unless its the intake issue..... he can't reach the supposed problem area.

Hers a gasser tip...

Bolt all you can on it, then build a tune for it. Dont throw a random tune on it and then start bolting stuff on.

I got a guy here in vegas that can dyno tune it and he does some wicked things with the gm gassers.

if you want a good tune call nelson performance in san antonio texas, its like 350$ for a tune (hptuners btw and programers blow stock tranys up) and free retunes once you add more mods, you call him he sends you a new pcm you ship old back no down time. sorry but when it comes to ls1 hp tuners has the upper hand hands down... a cam is always fun and converters do wonders but always start with basics, pacstters make a ok longtube offroad y setup, and as far as intakes its what ever, also these motors LOVE spray a 100 shot will last you forever.

BTW i had a nelson tune on my truck for 2 years i think and it ran great! be carefull with that trans they break like tooth picks it dosent take much to snap a input shaft...

for the code, cleaning the maf might help i cant recall what that code is though.

if you want info on cams let me know i know of a couple that do good, i also have a 3200 stall converter sitting around i would suggest a trans cooler if you get one though.

lol thoes are kinda pricey

if you are getting a lean code there diff reasons to cause it, an injector could be clogged, . check for exhaust leaks off the manifold on that side of the truck, once i got a leak on cylinder 7 and it was pulling in fresh air from the engine bay making it read lean (truck smelled super rich but wont make the truck run funny like it is) i think if the 02's go bad i think they read rich? that way you dont lean it out (but i cant remember for sure) if the intake manifold is leaking on bank one u might beadle to hear it. An injector is most probably i know up north the intake manifolds have problems because of the salt on the ice but idk about Nevada. if the fuel filter has been a while since its been changed you might need to run some bg products through the truck http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html

Had him check the manifolds already, cant see anything visible. He's also got 2 bottles/2 tanks of injector cleaner run through it. I used to work for BG, the 44k was the shit but theres no local dealers near where he lives. He's running the techron cleaner right now. I'll have him check the intake plenum again, not sure if a leak there would be audible or not. Already told him to drive it easy since its gonna be runnning hot with it leaned out.

Would a faulty MAF be able to cause this??

Thanks for the help.

iirc my gasser was throwin the same code. its an 02 gmc with the 5.3 and 270,000 miles on her. ended up being the evap sol. on the intake under the intake cover. someone broke the bolt off that holds it and tried to glue it back in. ran like poo when it was cold. got that fixxed and have had no other probs. but definately on go with a good intake and an exhaust and program it. they run awesome i think! we get 21mpg out of it.
