Thanks dude, I think that is definitely my next project. Either that or a 12v swap for our 454 2000 K2500

Sorry for derailing your thread sean, I am looking forward to seeing that mean BBC come alive :happy2:

Its real easy you can comfortably cruise with 5 people go 4x4'n tow the boat or camper get 15+ mpg and i guess i havent experienced similiar results in a car yet. The wife & i test drove a new camaro and when we brought it back we had both said this thing is uncomfortable no room and our lifted diesel will blow its doors off!

$ounds like a great deal though!

OTE=SmokeShow;551030]Why? You have a $50k sports truck that weighs more than twice their car? So, spent the same money to get similar results only it was harder for you than them. How is that awesome?

BTW I'm just playing devils advocate. Not really opposed to humbling sports cars with trucks. ;)

To the OP... DO IT! That's too good of a deal to pass up IMO![/QUOTE]

All in IMO... KB pistons, Junk. If it was me id tear it back down. That way you know what you have. Save up and put some good slugs in it. Like SRPs or even Forged TRWs. May wanna find a Th400 for it too. Stronger tranny than a Th350 but uses the same T/C. What heads are on it? Peanuts, Oval or Rectangle port intake? Comp Cams makes several hyd flat tappet cams for what ever you need. Performer RPM intake. Comp Cams roller rockers. Build it for around 10-1 compression ratio and you'll have all the hp and torque you need to have tons of run.

I have used plenty of sets of Keith Black Pistons and Total Seal rings with Great luck. It all boils down to the machine work on fitting the pistons to the bore correctly. Forged pistons you must run looser clearances for expansion and Keith Black are mainly Hyperutectic pistons that have little to no expansion. About .0015 clearance should be good. I ran many 383 and 388 as well as 406 small block chev's with those pistons with 11:1 compression victor jr. intake and Competition cams extreme energy roller 288. This put a 1970 Chevelle in the 12 teens @ 6,000 ft.

All in all there are better pistons out there but I really have no complaint on the KB's.

I will man. I plan on starting a build thread when I get the truck in the garage and can start on it. I plan to have it running within a month.

Have a friend with an 86' we built a low budget bbc and a 700r4 2800 stall, runs mid to low 14's not 13's, got a 14.01 last time out. His is geared 4:10. The Keith Blacks will do very well as long as you keep timing around 32*-36* with pump gas, you can go to 41* with some 100+ octane fuel with no pinging. If you start to get pinging those KB pistons will crack from the top to the first ring land very quick. Get some good roller rockers with locks, hardned pushrods and MSD dist and box and don't look back. We removed the a/c and dropped the rear 2" with a $40 shackle kit from Orilleys:D. After you get it where you want the motor and trans they make a very light fiberglass bed, fenders and hood for that series truck, hell for $5000 they make a complete cab out of fiberglass:thumb: We have built several BBC over the years if I can help pm me

Thanks for the useful info man. How do I go about setting the timing once the time comes?? You think 36* will work good with 93 octane...

Yes, if you can get true 93 then mix it half and half with 87, it actually comes out higher, do not know how but it does, we have to do this on our el camino with an olds 403. if we run 91-93 or 87 it pings, if we mix it 50/50 then no ping. As far as setting timing you need an advance timing light so you can visually see the mark and set it at 36*@2500. Make sure and get the drop in MSD dist without a vacuum advance. No need to mess with the springs and weights because the ones in it from MSD work perfectly with what you are doing. If you decide to go all out then you can play with the springs but usually I have had excellent results with the one it comes with. If you use the factory hei then disconnect the advance and plug the hose and do the same as above. MSD also offers a kit with the 6al box to convert the hei to work with the MSD box, its cheaper but you still have to buy the adapter, coil and box. Jegs has a kit with everything you need http://www.jegs.com/i/MSD+Ignition/121/85501K/10002/-1. I use these all the time and have had nothing but great expirence with it. Just remember to put the diode in the alt wire(its in the instructions) or it keeps running when you turn the key off:roflmao:

Any brand of timing light I should get? Also, how do you advance the timing on these old motors? By rotating the distributer? the cam??

This motor when it was running did 471hp on an engine dyno with a milder cam than what I'm putting back in it. So hopefully I can get 450 to the wheels. And I can't imagine this truck the motor is going in weighs much over 3000 pounds. So it ought to be a pretty fun truck to drive.

Yes, and its counter clock wise to advance it. I have a snap on but you can get a cheap one from any parts store usually around $40, it has a small black knob/dial on the back.
