I have a 79 Malibu that I have been working on for too many years. Going to be LS 900HP with an 8HP70 8 speed trans. Probably be another year before it comes together. Engine is almost finished. But the car needs a lot yet.
Are you sure you don't have an ignition problem? Bad cap, wires crossed up. Those clean pistons look washed clean like the plug wasn't firing or at the wrong time.

I drove mine for several thousand miles like that. Some of it pulling 12,000 lbs. Other than the smoke, smell and rough idle when hot it ran really well.
When you get the heads off check all the piston heights to make sure you didn't bend a rod from the hydro lock. Also sounds like you may have had coolant in the cylinders for long periods of time. Could have some rusty or etched cylinder walls.
I need to replace my down pipe. It was sealed to the exhaust pipe good but after taking it apart it's really rusty at the pipe connection and chunks falling off.
