Which direction does the balancer normally turn when looking at it from the front of the truck? Is it clockwise? I saw somewhere that you can turn the alternator counter clockwise to rotate the motor also, is there any harm in doing that while adjusting valves?

You can but I dont like to do it that way because you will be adjusting the valves on the coast side of the geartrain. So on a very small level the lash will change when the motor is running.

So the best way is to rotate the balancer clockwise when looking at it from the front?

thats the way I do it. Rotate the engine to #1 TDC compression stroke and adjust:

#1: I,E
#2: E
#3: I
#5: I
#6: I
#7: E
#8: E

Then rotate the crank one revolution and bring motor to #1 TDC exhaust stroke and adjust:

#2: I
#3: E
#4: I,E
#5: E
#6: E
#7: I
#8: I

This way you only have to get down on the ground twice to rotate the crank.
