LLY MAF reading low

I’m having an issue and wondering if it could be in the tune or the sensor itself.

Let’s start with what I have. It’s an 05 LLY 150k miles. It has 3” charge pipes, 3” Y-bridge, LBZ moth piece, LBZ K&N CAI, drivers side manifold without the dent, 2” stainless up pipes, 3” downpipe, 4” exhaust no muffler, ported fuel rail fitting, shimmed relief valve, cat filter, lift pump, full gauges, CTS insight, and tuned by Bob Olsen.

My issue is I’m getting excessive smoke and lag on acceleration. I’ve been seeing a P0101 code for the MAF sensor. Not setting CEL but code is stored. I’m gonna check for the chafed wires but they’ve been covered and protected since I got the truck. Also gonna try cleaning the MAF this weekend but I’m coming here for ideas because at idle I’m seeing 22.4 g/s on the MAF. Is this a good number?

One other thing that might be worth mentioning, I’m seeing an excessive amount of soot on engine. Visually I don’t see any exhaust leaks, my PCVs have been rerouted but I think that it may be a turbo pedestal leak or somewhere around there. My up pipes don’t appear to be the culprit as they are clean. Appears the soot is coming from the back and rolling under the turbo intake and up around the y-bridge and fan is blowing it back across the top of the engine. I’ll know more on that when I start cleaning and inspecting this weekend.

Any pointers, past experience or info is greatly appreciated. I’ll upload pics when I grab a few.

Take care and stay safe,
Jim

Another piece of info, while taking off from a stop, normal throttle in traffic, my EGTs climb to about 1175*F but then come down once I’m at cruising speed. 600-700*F. I watched my gauges closely today. It’s 87* and I had the air on. My drive pressure and boost seem normal. Fuel rail pressure is good too. Pic just showing gauges, where they are at is irrelevant.

Injector balance, but this was after a 25 minute drive and in park. I’ll get a cold reading in morning.

I’m gonna dig into it on Saturday so hopefully I’ll have it figured out or at least more info on what I find.

I see you have a K&N filter. Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor?

Also, all balance rates are supposed to be done with the engine up to temp. So no need for cold readings.

X2 on cleaning the MAF. Oiled air filters and MAF sensors sometimes don't play nice. A stuck open egr valve would mirror all of your symptoms but it looks like yours is gone. That reading seems low. Unless some goofy adjustments have been done to the MAF scaling in the tune you should see 28-32 in my experiences. Low maf usually indicates
Sticking egr valve
Dirty sensor
Intake leak between maf sensor and turbo inlet
Plugged exhaust
Excessive blow by
Since your pcv is re routed it can't be blow by, unless you still have the DOC in the exhaust it likely isn't a plugged exhaust, if egr parts are gone can't be that either. That leaves intake leak or a dirty/bad sensor.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, EGR is totally gone. This thing has had upgrades, tuned and been deleted for years now. Probably like 5 years. This issue has been recent. I’m leaning toward dirty or bad MAF also. I did just recently “recharge” the K&N in the last month or so, hope that’s all it is. I planned on working on this thing today but unfortunately I blew my back out yesterday working on a Mitsubishi Lancer, most likely when I pushed it in garage by myself. Been stuck on my back alternating between heating pad and ice pack hopped up on muscle relaxers and Vicodin. Maybe I’ll be able to clean MAF 2mrw. I’ll update when I know more.

Finally able to check into this MAF. Pulled intake pipe and sensor and it’s contaminated with filter charge oil.

Air filter doesn’t appear to be breaching anymore.

I’m gonna replace the filter. Looks to me to be a little beaten and has served its purpose. I have a smaller filter that I use while charging K&N so I’m gonna throw that in for now after I clean everything and hopefully I’ll see 38-42g/s on the MAF.

Here’s the MAF itself.

Sorry for the lack of the update. Haven’t driven it much. I’ve been playing around in my Formula this summer and I had a sticking caliper on the truck so it sat for a while. I ended up replacing both front calipers and rotors.

Replaced a loose hub bearing on the passenger side.

Figured it was time to replace my brake lines as well with some stainless ones I’ve had for about a year and never got around to doing.

Threw in an aluminum radiator to help cool this pig since I was seeing 210* coolant temps.

After radiator, I was seeing 190-194* temps so it helped tremendously. But the trans cooler must be a lot smaller in this new radiator because my TFTs were pushing 230* on the highway. Had to upgrade the cooler. Installed 2 coolers, one 25 row and one 30 row with a fan.

Also put some 10AN hoses on it to replace the stock trans lines as you can see in the pic. Fan has a 200* temp switch on it but also a switch inside to turn it on manually. Then I wanted as much air as possible to flow thru all the coolers so I swapped out my grill.

Still have to do some finishing touches on the sides of the grill but it flows a lot more air. Now trans temps are in the 170’s.

But the MAF is still reading the same. I need to figure it out still.

Those lights you put in the bumper are blocking air flow. There should be a panel behind the bumper that directs air up into the cooling stack.

Those trans coolers would work best in parallel so you don’t get as much of a pressure drop.

So you think I should add a tee before and after the coolers and put the temp switch on the inlet? Not too hard to make that happen if I need to. Thanks for the insight.

I was thinking that they might block some air flow but they are set back enough where air will still get around them. That and with the front opened up so much it’s getting more air than it ever did. I need the light because some of the roads I travel at night going to work there are a lot of suicidal deer and I don’t wanna do HID lights because I get people flashing me with just my normal headlights. I’ve adjusted the headlights down but still had to put the light covers on. I just use my fogs and I have no issues. When I switch on my brights I have all lights on (DRL, low, high, fog and light bars). Also have a switch for just the light bars. I’m seeing much lower coolant temps now than I ever have but I figured someone would catch that and comment. I’ve been holding off putting these lights in just for that reason you mention. In winter I use just a bumper bra to help get heat and it actually makes a big difference just covering the holes in bumper. I’m sure this winter I’m gonna have to block some of the grill to get any kind of heat but leave the bumper cover off. Appreciate you chiming in.

Coming to work tonight my lift pump stopped working. Not sure if it’s the pump or an electrical issue. I checked fuse and it’s good. I had to limp that thing home and jump in the bird to come to work. It’s a Raptor pump I got from Scott probably 5-6 years ago. What is the life expectancy on these lift pumps? Is there a rebuild kit or should I just get a new one? I guess I should be searching this instead of asking but I might not get time so maybe someone will chime in before I get a minute to search. Any info or links are greatly appreciated. Should I stick with Raptor or go with another flavor? TIA.

Just got home from work and it was here. Have a birthday party to attend and then a date with my truck and this pump. Hopefully have it running tonight and drive to work 2mrw.
