Lift Kits for Dummies

I've done all I can to talk myself out of lifting my truck, but it's killing me not being lifted. The look is just too appealing. That being said, I know next to nothing about lifts, and I'm a college student on a budget. I've currently only got a leveling kit on her.

The truck in question is a 2006 Chevy 2500HD DURAMAX 4x4.

I really like this look:

From what I've read, once you get past a 6" lift, you have to start upgrading major parts such as steering and drive shafts, so I think I'll keep it at a 6" lift. I have been throwing around the idea of an 8" but I need an idea of how much that'll bump up the cost.

So next I looked into brands, and saw the most recommended were fab tech, cognito, and rough country.

So first question: what brand have you personally ran, and what was your experience?

Second: what's the difference price and parts wise on 6" and 8" lift?

Third: Would I be better off doing lift blocks rather than a lift kit?

Fourth: biggest tires I'd be able to run under a 6" lift, or 4" block lift?

I know these are probably basic questions but I know nothing about what I'm getting myself into and would love to educate myself.

Rough country 6" seems to be the best bang for the buck at about 1200 bones.

6-8" is a pretty steep price jump 2K+ for the 8" stuff.

Lift blocks as in Body lift? No body lift...

35's can be made to fit with cranked torsion bars and proper wheel back spacing... 33's for 4" and 35's 6" looks correct to me.

I had a Rancho 4" put in. I believe they also did a leveling kit. I run 285-75-16s and I had to trim a wee bit off the bumper plastic. I think they measure up to be 32.8". I think it ran around 3g with alignment. Hindsight, better shocks.

I've got a new Cognito 6-9" kit that I'll let go cheap (return). Boxes have been opened and verified to be complete and new ($1500) with front Bilstein shocks. Normally $1889

(1) FSLK100701 7" TBD front suspension lift system for a 2001-2010 GM 8-lug 4WD with single rear soft brake line
(2) Bilstein-7fk-gm8l-2001 Bilstein front shocks for 7" lift

What wheels were you running?

I think I've decided on a Zone 6" lift. I've read they're like a sister company to BDS, and have yet to read any bad reviews! As to tires,
35/12.5/20
With
20x12-44 wheels. Thoughts?

I'm installing one on a friends truck next week:thumb:

Would you mind reporting back on quality and ease of install?

How hard are lift kits to do yourself? I've got access to a garage with a lift and all the tools I think I'd need including welding machines and cutters.

Your truck looks like a CC/SB truck; it should have a one piece rear driveshaft. If that is the case, it doesn't have a carrier bearing.
