I'm looking on ebay at Tech 2 scanners and im confused. Some are going for $5000 and some are going for less than $1000. How do I determine which is real is which is fake? Also what all do I need for a complete kit?

Im looking at these:

Just so you know, I didn't look at any of the links.

5k seems quite steep. The 2 range is more like it.

Also some dealerships use fake tech 2s. And people here, they work. There is thread about them already. A quick search should do it.

Yup, a quick search yielded some good info and I'm pretty sure those I listed are genuinely fake

Found some more info:

BBA said:
How to determine if a Tech2 Handset is a clone
BBA-Reman the UK aftermarket supplier of the Tech2
have carried out an investigation into
differences between a genuine Vetronix/Bosch Tech2
handset and a Clone unit commonly
found on various UK and international based website
s.
The main External differences we noticed were
:
• Serial No. font is slightly different and has sta
rs instead of asterisks
• Plastic housings are slightly different in colour
• Void labels are larger on clone units with writin
g through them
• Serial No. labels should say “Assembled in USA”,
not “Made in the USA”
• Tech 2 VCI lever is black and should not be grey
• Some cloned units are missing the “Option Label”
• Some clone units have a “No HBCC” label on them a
nd Vetronix units do
Not use that label on the Tech 2
• Vetronix uses “hex” screws and not Phillips screw
s as we found
• Some clone units can have a “warranty” sticker on
the side of the unit
• Header label colour and texture is different to a
genuine one
The main CANdi External differences we noticed were
:
• The connector on Candi cable should be aluminium
in colour and not
Gold or brass
• LED should be green; some clone units have red or
orange LED’s
• Some clone Candi cables have no mfg specs stamped
at all on the
Cabling and leads
• Serial No. font is much bolder on the cloned unit
s and is not in our sequential order.
• Back label should be textured, cloned unit labels
are smoother
• Some cloned Candi units have a “void” label on si
de of unit. Vetronix
Units do not this any where
• Vetronix logo on cable on cloned units is in all
CAPS, should be
“Vetronix” standard lower case
There were many internal differences that were clea
rly visible and notably the build quality
was a major factor. Also the components used were o
f a poor quality bringing reliability and
functionality issues.

Maybe some work, or maybe all work initially, but be VERY careful about updating. A friend of mine worked at a shop that ended up with a clone Tech 2 which worked fine.... until they tried to update it, at which point it roached itsself. They contacted the vendor they got it from and got it replaced, then tried to update again.... and the replacement roached itsself again in exactly the same manner.... They tried updating mine using the same PC, cable & TIS2WEB login and it updated just fine. There seems to be **SOMETHING** about the clones (or at least some clones) that the TIS2WEB update somehow detects and causes a self destruct of something in the Tech2. And it's not the card. After the update that roached the Tech2, their card worked in my Tech2 and my card exhibited the same failed behavior in theirs (I actually don't think my 32MB card is a genuine card). **SOMETHING* was roached in the Tech2 by the update attempts.

Personally, I'd avoid clones like the plague. I went so far as to buy my CANDi module though a local dealership to make sure I didn't get a clone.

I should have been a bit more clear. That thread about them has much more information though. And which ones have worked. They definitely don't all work.

Thanks cougar!

I bought a fake one from alliexpress a few years back and it's been great. I haven't used it in it's fully capacity, but for the normal code reading, balance rates, and BCM/ECM control it's worked. I bought one with a candi module and have used it up to a 2011 and various GM vehicles. It did ship with the latest software up to 2013.

I recently bought an MDI/GDS2 because of my 2015 and no longer need it. PM if you are interested in purchasing it.
