Hello all,
I recently took on fabing my own cognito braces. The price seemed a little too steep for myself and it was a good reason to dust of the old lathe and Lincoln welder.
I started off sourcing the hiem joints. the kit specified 3/4 bore with 5/8 NF thread. I searched but could not find any with the same thread size so i went with 3/4 NF thread. Something like $20 in my mailbox.
I could have purchased replacement shank nuts for around $25, but what fun is that? Chunk of 1" Cold rolled steel ought to work alright.
I used a little thicker steel strapping and built up the material with the welder where i could. Especially in the corners where i bent it. It should be quite a bit stronger than what you can buy and I can keep almost all of my steering range yet without the bracing contacting the frame.
I also had to turn out a taper inside the jamb nuts so i could get more clearance.
All said and done i have about $25 and 6 hrs of beer time invested.
Just thought i should share my findings.
