2019 vs 2020 Towing Capacity. What changed?

So I'm looking at the the 2019 towing capacity, and for a Chevy Silverado 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 with a standard bed and the 6.6l Duramax engine it's rated at 13,500 lb's. But the new 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the same configuration is rated at 18,500 lb's.

What changed? Frame improvement? Bigger drive train?

larger cooling stack and fan plus the new trans I believe are the biggest reason they get more out of them

New gvwr sticker is the biggest change. But, yeah, what James and Mike said. Frame and brakes are the same

Another thing they told us at training was the ability for the vehicle to slow the weight down raised trailering capacity. So I'm guessing the braking system has some improvements to it over the 19 model year

Maybe its all programming in the brake controller/hydroboost/abs and grade braking

Id put money on all in the programming and new gear ratio in the caboose. The truck should have a much stronger feeling engine brake .

hopefully it will stop like a cummins truck now. im sure the 10 speed is awesome , neighbor just got a 2500 with the 6.6 gasser under the hood. The new HD trucks look great in person. Cant wait to drive one of the l5p's with a 10 speed.

TFLTruck did a comparison with the big 3. The Chevy had the most brake touches of the 3 with Dodge having zero. I think it was 9 and the Ford had 6. This is coming down the hill from the Eisenhower tunnel. The Dodge test is skewed though as the intuitive cruise control operates the trailer brakes to hold speed as well as turbo brake...so they say.

I seen that too. Almost like cheating. One issue I see is it potentially over heating the brakes but you wont know it until you try and stop and the brakes fade badly

That would be very concerning, I’ve heard the trans tuning is way too aggressive and works too well, so I’m hoping it isn’t using much of the brakes.

So hypothetically speaking, let's say I'm towing a 15,400 toy hauler with a 2019 Silverado 2500, will the engine brake be enough on most steep grades or am I going to have to tap the brakes a few times? How much easier would it be on the brakes in the 2020 Silverado 2500?

if you let it automatically do its own thing, probably have to push the brakes 2 times on either truck on our grades. if you manually downshift them knowing whats coming up, probably never have to touch the brakes on either.

next time we head somewhere, we can do some comparisons.
