So I decided I wanted to trade in my 2018 Black Silverado High Country 2500 HD to get a 2020 High Country or a Denali 2500 HD . Yesterday on my lunch brake I test drove a 2020 Sierra SLT 2500 HD 10 SPD at a GMC dealership, I test drove it hard with the salesman on board . Put it in 4H and floored it from a dig and from idle , I was not impressed to say the least, with the performance from a dead stop anyway . The truck has some nice new technology and new body style but 80K for it I think not . After work I went and test drove a 2019 Silverado High Country 2500 HD 6 SPD with no salesman , I put it in 4H and floored it from a dead stop and idle , my Butt Dyno told me it launched harder and performed better than the 2020 10 SPD and for 10K less . The 10 SPD SHIFTED ALMOST SEAMLESSLY and super smooth . The performance going from 60 or 70 already then stomping it seemed the same from truck to truck . Will all that said I opted for the 2019 that was totally loaded for $ 61,200 instead of paying in the high 70s for a 2020 . To me the 2019!looks better and smoother.

I figured there were plenty on here that could benefit from the info . I made sure that I test drove both on the same day within 2 hrs of each other and launched both from idle from a dead stop in 4H , granted I didn’t have a passenger when I test drove the 2019 but the difference I noticed in take offs is that the 2020 had more lag , it took longer before it came : on . :D:D

Was it physically slower or did it feel slower because the trans was smoother

I would highly doubt you would ever see the 10 speed out do the 6 speed in a drag race. It’s the towing where it will really shine.

Was it skip shifting gears or was it shifting through every gear?

In theory. The 6 speed to me would utilize the torque of the engine a bit more appropriately vs the 10 speed. Like James said the 10 speed is going to shine when towing. First gear tcc is going to be even more impressive!

Sounds like there’s room to improve the 10 speed shifting strategy, pressures, etc. I took out back to back Chevy Traverse with 6 and then 9speed and dammit if that 9 speed didn’t feel so much more responsive, quicker we, and usually in the right gear.

The trans was not sleep shifting at all , it was just super smooth , the trans was not the issue with the performance at all , it might be the 3.42 gears that cause the 2020 to come out of the hole slower. The 2019 definitely comes in quicker from a stand still no bones about it for me anyway. In my mind once they both get going the performance is the same . As far as the towing , Most I tow is my 22’ car hauler with Mighty Max aboard which would be about 10K pounds , with that said my 2018 pulled extremely easily hell running all she’ll go at 97–98 MPH and accelerates from a dead stop no problem at all and the 2019 is the exact same setup , it’s a BEAST IN STOCK FORM .

I doubt its the 3.42 rear end. The 2020 has a deeper 1st gear final ratio then the 2018. Maybe torque management or throttle sensitivity. Or perhaps just more gears to shift through

I drove one Thursday and it was a big difference in power from my 16. Seriously way quicker. Also I completely agree with the 10spd. It felt incredibly smooth

Remember, there is ALOT more rotating mass now with the 10 speed. That will suck power. I’m sure the converter is a bit different as well. I’m better 1st gear isn’t active unless in tow/haul. Jeep does the same with their 9 speed in the wranglers. First is 4:1 in those too.

Lots of little things that I’m sure add up to “lack of off the line performance”.

With the weights these things can pull, 10k is light duty work. Hell the 15k I’ll pull most likely won’t strain it much till summer time. These things are becoming real animals for towing so lighter stuff feels like nothin for them

I was unaware that the 2020 had to have tow/haul on in order to for the 10 SPD to engage 1st gear ,:confused:

im not saying its that way, im guessing as its WAY overkill to start out in 1st with the torque they make. its really pointless unless loaded down. i could be wrong but ill see when mine shows up.
