Didn't 6.5s have nv4500?
yes they did. I know a duramax can only fit a 12 inch clutch that's why they are grabbier at an equal plate load that that of a cummins with a 13 inch clutch. I have had a 6.5 with a nv4500 and the gears in the zf are closer and better it has a shorter throw and im my opinion stock for stock stronger, however you need special tools to put them back together and they are harder to come by and pricier but id say it would be worth it.i probably would I have got a cummins if I couldn't find a duramax with a stick:eek:
hard to believe but its true. id go zf

but I know a guy that makes his own adaptive bell housings for derby cars but I think the bell would bolt up right. you can get an 8.1 with an Allison or a 4l80e correct? I may be wrong. and you can get a 90's chevy with a 350 and a 4l80e or a 6.5 with the same auto so as far as the bell it would work a zf has a bigger input shaft 1 3/8 factory. where as the nv4500 has a smaller one you can get a bigger one but I don't know if it would spline

This would be for just a pulling truck. If I have a custom adapter/ rear cover built why would I still be limited to 12 inch clutch? Just buy a dodge trans

As you seem to know, you'd need to use a dodge bell instead of the chevy so you can run the larger diam. AND more disks. As long as you're able to source an adapter easy enough, you're good to go.

Why nv4500?

u wouldn't:woott: when I said a duramax couldn't fit a bigger clutch I meant one with a zf not a duramax in general sorry. the hd's have a body lift to clear the Allison. I wonder if the zf is smaller leaving you more room to make a bigger housing or if its the same size as an Allison. so you wouldn't have to modify the firewall or anything maybe?? would you adapt it to the newer t case or an older one with the correct side front output?

I know a 5 speed Allison from a 01-02 would be easiest, I know the wiring and everything changed in 03 and probably again in 07.5 but how hard would that 2008 tranny be to use? I think I could get it dirt cheap. But Ill see if I can find an 01-02, not really set on doing the swap, just thinking about it.

If you grab it, I have valve body's ill trade you for that 6spd valve body. Or I have a built 5spd/precision conv I'll trade for the ZF package with cash on top.

I think I heard some where that profab makes adapters for the nv4500, could be wrong though

Why? Get a GM bellhousing from a 6.5, 454, or 350 and bolt it up. Personally I wouldn't, but that's me. And if your going to try it, at least get a DODGE NV4500 from a CUMMINS. GM and DODGE gassers used the NV4500 LD while the CUMMINS got the NV4500 HD. I believe you can swap in the GM input shaft to a DODGE NV4500 and bolt it up so long as you have the later internal slave bellhousing.
