Pretty interesting. I know they put these in the Lexus ISF. Couple buddies of mine have a shop and had a Jag in there with the ZF 6 speed... interesting, but this takes it up a notch. I guess this 8 speed is supposed to handle 740ft lb/tq! Not bad!!

That belongs behind a D-Max. Hey where's Mike L., I'm sure he could build it to handle at least a 1000lbs. of tq. Imagine having two more speeds, that would be awesome. Might as well throw in some paddle shifters too. :D

why would that be "so awesome"....??????

Because "OoOOOooO OMG its 8 speeds!!!!"?

Big deal. Even a stock duramax towing a heavy load would destroy that thing. Look at the size of the internals, and the fact that theres only 3 tiny planets per gearset.

Not to mention the damn thing would be shifting ALL the time, so you'd need some massive cooler to shed all of that heat.

The reason for 7 and 8 speed transmissions is for the new foreign engines out there that make 5 and 6 hundred hp and no tq. If these new engines had a 4 or 5 speed trans they would fall on their face after every gear change. They are designed to keep the engine in its power curve consistantly because of the lack of tq.

Thing would shift so many times it would be annoying. Some of these new passenger vehicles with 6spd autos are annoying shifting so many times while getting up to speed. Can't imagine an 8 speed!!

I have an 8 speed auto in my BMW X5 35I. It's pretty good but I agree that they are tuned for the power curve. The X5 35D still has a 6 speed prob because it has the torque.

Sorry there boss, didn't mean for you to take me so seriously on the subject. It sure seems though that more manufacturers are upping the number of speeds in their transmissions for better economy/performance. Guess that's why we are not driving our trucks with a 3 speed turbo 400 in it........

So now you're going to make fun of my TH350 trans in my LMM? WTF..

simply having an automatic with more than 6-speeds isnt whats going to make these trucks get better fuel economy, read Mike's post.

I read it and I understand the need for gas cars to stay in their torque curve, hence the need for 6,7, and 8 speed transmissions. I guess that's why 18 wheelers use 2 speed powerglide transmissions :sarcasm:

We are manufacturing 8 speed ZF parts early next year and currently working on 9 speed!!

I knew I couldn't be way out of line on this topic. I'm by no means any expert, but it looks like Dodge is upping the number of gears in their transmissions for their Hemi powered trucks/cars, and eventually their heavy duty line of diesel trucks.

Thats because the current 68rfe is a piece of crap, they NEED something else.

We dont NEED something else.

18 wheelers have 78 speed transmissions because their engines have an effective operating RPM range of less than 1000rpm, not to mention they are MANUAL'S...no torque converter to come into play. Whats ours effective RPM operating range? 3000+? And we have a torque converter.

Allison makes HUGE automatic transmissions for tractor trailers. Guess how many speeds they have.

You guys can pay for your 8+ speeds and be all giddy over it. If more speeds are "all that" then why do LB7's with "ONLY" 5 speeds get just as good, if not better mileage than 6-speed LBZ's and LMM's. Im perfectly happy with 5. :D
