checked all that the fuel rail is getting up to 6700 psi at cranking. the PSI changes a little but runs between 5700 and 6700. I took the made IN CHINA filter the mechanic put on off and put a Napa Gold back on. According to all the parameters the thing should start.

Thannks.

What actually tells the injectors to fire and when to fire? the F.I.C.M. or the ECM? It is like the injection timing is off. It shows injectors adv. 2.0 degrees.

I'll take my computer to work so when I get to the shop I can check back here.

injection timing is fully electronically set in the tune. Its not like it can be physically "off" like you're thinking.......

If its puffing smoke out the exhaust, then the injectors seem to be firing.

Do another compression test....

Fuel Pressure... Check...
Injectors firing... Check...

This may seem hard to do but could it be possible that the injectors plugs above the calve covers have been switched???? (Front two are plugged into the back two???)
This could cause a very rough idle and smokle out the exhaust since injectors would basicaly be firing right out the exhaust stroke.

yeah if it is getting smoke from the tail pipe they are injecting fuel, IIRC the compession should be around 400 cranking. is there any chance that a shop rag got left somewhere in the bridge or the boost pipe coming up from bridge? I have seen this happen and it blocks the air flow and will not start no way. I doubt this is the case since it will fire on starting fluid though. do you have access to a known good FICM?

My bosses son's 03 is sitting in the bay next to mine waiting a tourqe converter so we can put the trans back in......Wonder if he would notice....hehehe.

Checking more fuel system stuff today I sprayed a face full of fuel out of the valve on the passenger side of the fuel rail. It smells funny. A little like diesel and solvant or something like that. I wonder if someone was not happy with the shop I took it to and poured something in the tank...I would think it would still start but run like crap.

does it register RPM when cranking?

(I mean, does it show RPM on a scan tool, the cluster isnt gonna show anything because it shuts down when you turn the key to crank....but if you have a scan tool plugged in and monitoring data, it should show ~175-200rpm when cranking)

When you turn the key to crank, does the engine keep cranking as long as you hold the key to start, or does it only crank for a second or two and then cut off by itself, even though you are still holding the key to start???

It is showing RPM. It will stop turning over after a while I'd say about 3-4 seconds.

I guess what my question is...What tell the computer where the timing is. My guess would be the cam and crank sensor? Then what take that info and tells the injectors when to fire? The ECM or FICM??

Put on new crank sensor and it started up right away. Now I'm getting a EGR low voltage code and it is running in like a limp mode :(...

thought they checked the reluctor wheel already.. if it fired right up with a new sensor I would imagine the wheel is fine.

yup but they also said the sensor was fine. checked the wheel as best I could and looked fine couldn't get no movement out of it.... I ran it for a while today and got a code on four of the injectors and the injector control circiut group 2. So I guess all that is left is to tear it back down to the injectors and find out what is up with the connection and or harnesses.
