So, it looks as though I am going to be back in Northern NY just in time for winter. It will be my first winter up there with my truck and as I am new with diesel and from the South I was hoping to get some guidance on what I should be doing to prepare for the winter.

I have about a month until it will start to get cold, back from afghan in early October, I figure by November it will be cold.

2004.5 LLY.

also don't know where the heater connection is, but i know there should be one.

thanks in advance

Well I haven't been through one yet, got there last summer then deployed through the winter, but from what I hear November it starts to get cold and can hit -20 sometimes in the coldest times and upwards of 100 inches of snow (lake effect)

Mine has always started fine at 20*..... little slower cranking and WTS light is on a bit longer but never had any issues with fuel gelling. Most stations mix additives to keep fuel liquid in cold temps. However carrying some power service or 911 with you couldn't hurt....just in case. Most auto parts stores will carry that. High idle option is nice too, if you have efi, help warm the truck up.

Cold front. Block, oil, and trans heaters IMO. Plug in every night, carry diesel 911, and an extra fuel filter and serpentine belt.

During the winter I run a 15w40 syn oil, front grille cover (GM), and dump in some Stanadyne at every fill up. I usually plug in at around -15C / 5F or colder. Also make sure your batteries are good to go. I don't trust winter fuel, so I always dump in some additive and so far so good even at -50.

I run a winter front, stanadyne with #2 fuel, and I run synthetic 5 w40 all year. Plug in when it is below 20* and use the high idle.
