Winter time coolant temps

Yesterday I was investigating my shit fuel economy and noticed that my coolant temps would not go over 160. That temp was after 2 different 50 mile trips. Is this normal or are the t-stats bad? Outside air temp was 25-35.

are you talking about gauge temps or efi live temp? my gauge reads 210 at full temp, but efi shows 185.

going off the dash gauges it'll get around 200-210, off the throttle it'll drop pretty quick. I have the cover on it now, so it holds temps pretty well, and we've been in the teens-20's in the mornings.

get a front cover (winter cover)

the engine being under temp can lower fuel mileage, so i hear lol

The low economy is one of the problems. I just put new t-stats in and the temp is all good now. What's funny is that I did the stats after driving probably 60 miles and the coolant felt cold to the touch.

Plus extended startup idle times also ruin fuel mileage. Question: how does one test the winter coolant protection level on these trucks? Just test out of the coolant bottle or out of the air bleed off screw?

In the summer here in Arizona (100 degrees+) the highest my coolant temp has gone is 213 and that was only once.. In the winter (the outside temp is still in the 50s) my coolant temp is in the high 180's. My trans temp is in the high 130s

Out of the tank is fine.

I've noticed that mine smells like its running rich now that its colder out (25*-35*) but the gauge still stays about 180.

I've got the same problem in my 06. I think I'm just gonna run my cover when it drops off in temps again.

Not to highjack, but is the grille cover about the only one needed? Temps won't be under 30 for the high here for awhile.

how long is it taking people to get up to operating temps, i had a thermostat problem and couldn't get over 140 but after replacing them i can now get to 190 but it still takes way longer then i want (well over 5-8 miles even after warming up to about 80-100* idling in the driveway.

just dont like driving it under 180 and then parking it at work having the thermostats never open

So to dredge this up again, truck runs one notch under the 1/4 mark on the dash gage. Just seems a little cool. It the thermostats are 185* should that not read higher. Guess I am just trying to figure out if I need to replace them or not?

TX of course
I would replace them or at least pull them and test them. If I live up north I would of done it by now. If its under 60* my coolant will just about never get over 185*. My last trip up north I completely blocked off my radiator and I still normaly sat at 200 or under.

IIRC one tstat opens at 180* and the other at 207*
