Question: Windows 10

Anyone upgrade their Windows machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for FREE, just did my spare laptop not the one with EFI Live on it for the truck.? I would suggest that you go through all the application settings (Apps) and turn them OFF. They allow access to all emails, email addresses, phone numbers, pictures, documents, saved passwords, etc.

The default settings are all ON so the damage while installing is already done, the AGREEMENT you click on in the beginning makes it OK for Windows to scan/save all of your current personnel information.........

Nothing like having a chainsaw up your ass and not even knowing about it and you agreed to it....

Windows 10 blows donkey dick. My wife bought us a new laptop for Christmas (no consultation from me) and it's a pile of junk with windows 10 on it. She bought it way early, so the return period was well over by the time Christmas came. $600 laptop that I can't stand to use.

Windows 7 is going to be around for a long time, if I'm correct I don't think Windows 10 has been certified by a lot of multi-million dollar medical machines such as radiation treatment machines manufactured by Varian, GE etc.

The Varian radiation treatment machines were going through certification (Varian certification) on Windows 7 about 6 years ago and it was not complete at that time.

I hate 10. I like to use the touch pad to scroll etc and it always change the zoom on the screen. Drives me nuts. If I had EFI on a computer with 10 I would be irate.

I'm pretty sure can set 10 to never update or you can choose how often it updates. Mine is every 30 days. Had someone smarter than me fix it!

Officially, only the Enterprise version can disable updates, and even then there are rules about how long you can disable them. There are tricks to disable updates on the Home & Pro versions, but they aren't supported, and might cause problems.

I'm with everyone here, I can't have my computer decide to reboot for updates when it wants to. I need it to work now, not in 10 minutes when it is done updating. Windows 7 lets me control when I reboot and update, so my computer stays available during the week when I need it.

That and I have concerns about the privacy (or lack thereof) with Windows 10. Do I have anything to hide? No, my life is boring. But it is a matter of principle for me. What I do with my computer is my business, and no one else's!

All of the issues that you guys are "worried" about can be changed.

Check out this Start Menu. http://www.classicshell.net/ Download and install. It works great if you hate the Windows 10 start menu and want to go back to a Win 7 style.

If you leave the updates settings off and/or don't run your computer for say a month or more like I have with my 2 laptops it will not update. Takes e few tweaks I found online and rebooting about 4 times then it will update. I still have one unused Windows 7 program and may end up building my next desktop computer just to have Windows 7....

I declined my 'free' update to 10 after I read that 10 transmits all your information to the mother ship. I hate windows these days. I'll take Linux on days that end in Y. Unfortunately, not all programs I need will run on *nix.

So far that is only the Enterprise version. I'm going to guess that they may try it with the Home and Pro versions. Just means I'll load a Linux variant or if I get desperate buy (gulp) an Apple.

I shouldn't have to spend hours configuring my OS to not suck, especially when the previous version works fine. If I am going to spend hours configuring my computer before I can trust it, I'll install Linux.

I already use Linux for most things at work, just using Windows 7 + PuTTY + VcXsrv as a front end. For the last 4 years or so, I've been buying (or finding free open source) apps that are all dual-platform. I only have 2 programs left that require Windows (one being EFILive). My plan is when Windows 7 goes out of extended support (in 2020), I'll install Linux on all but one of my computers, and just use Windows for EFILive.

Yes, you can get Windows 10 to look how I want, and update when I want, and mostly stop the telemetry / logging, but it takes more effort than I should have to give to make my computer do what I want. If Windows 10 doesn't make some changes before 2020, I'll be on Linux.

The crazy part of all this is I used to be a huge Windows / Microsoft fanboy. I have a server at home running Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter, a dozen VMs, a full Active Directory domain setup, etc, etc. With the constantly moving target that is Windows 10, it has suddenly become as much effort to maintain my Windows infrastructure as it would be for Linux. The main reason I loved Windows to begin with is it came setup well out of the box, and was easy to configure & maintain how I wanted. This no longer looks to be the path forward for Windows, sadly.

im still over here using XP on my EFI laptop. 11 year old dell 17" screen and still works fine for truck tuning/scanning work, just needs a new battery as you only get about 20 min from it so i keep an inverter in the truck. the damn thing is just slow on start up. i have a newer HP laptop at home i got in 09 on windows 7 i think ill swap everything over to one day. clearly im way behind the times on computers but i just dont use them other than work. phone does just about all i need. hell the only time my old dell gets on the internet is for an EFI Live update or to buy a license lol

Linux has made huge strides in the last 10 years in this regard. These days configuration and updates are pretty straightforward and easy. Remember the days when Linux didn't do PNP and all your hardware had to be configured manually?

I took the free update and returned it to Windows 7. After a while it purchased a new one with 10 on it and it hasn't been much of a problem. I really I stalled the free upgrade on my other and it works fine now. I'm not a huge fan of it but there are some nice features with it all in all. They surely could make it better .

I started playing with Linux in about 2000, and it was a lot harder to get a system where all the hardware would work right. I have always had at least one Linux VM for projects & testing, but lately, I seem to be doing more actual work on Linux than Windows. I think that is a sign that it might be time to jump ship in the next year or two.

Plus, as I get older and more cynical, the FOSS / libre philosophy is making more and more sense to me. Still not sure it is compatible with our current society / economy, but that's a different discussion entirely. Long story short, my trust in our government and large corporations is at an all-time low, and Linux / FOSS scratches that particular itch.

I have a lot of customers that have had windows force upgrade to 10. Go to never10.com and download the registry edit to stop notifications and prevent force update. But I have also heard a lot of personal info getting stolen once upgraded to 10. Never looked into the issue personally but never had it happen to a customer of mine yet. Ever since 8 Microsoft loved to collect personal Metadata. Scary


Every computer build I do I still run Windows 7. I'm not a fan of windows 10 yet.
