Just showing Josh why you should replace the oil cooler if you blow your motor, It is very hard to be sure that is cleaned out with the small holes inside of it.Also you play hell getting the oring back in place that holds it all together that and you GM does not sell it, Once the you blow your motor they say to replace this is not serviceable.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the pictures.

edit: Did you look at yours while you had it out? If so, what did it look like?

I took a chance and flushed mine out, I shut mine down and trailed the truck home, I had just changed the oil before it blew and we cut the filter apart and looked thru the oil for metal flake nothing so I reused mine. But its a chance not sure how bad your piston broke.

I don't think there was much if any metal in my oil. I think most of it either vaporized or stuck to the cylinder wall.

What sucks is when you take the cooler apart the o ring is not sold by GM at all and its hard to get the cooler sealed back up. So you have to use alot of RTV to get the old o ring to hold in place as you put her back together.

The engine oil cooler is not typically a component that goes bad, but should be replaced after any catastrophic engine failure. Any time metal is pumped through the engine from internal failure, it can accumulate in the oil cooler. Due to the stack plate design of the oil cooler, cleaning out that debris can be nearly impossible. The best way to protect a new engine investment is to put a new cooler on to prevent any contamination

supply galler to oil coiler/filter housing
