When they stick or at least when mine did whatever they did it threw codes that said vane post would not learn or something. When you start the truck the vane cycles through its range of motion. If the vanes are burnt they could be limited on there travel. I tried to troubsho:hugt mine through the dvt function and when I would manually change the vane post it made no difference in the sound of the exhaust. However when the truck idled the vane would hunt and cause the exhaust to whistle then stop over and over. Sounded funny. Not sure if this is similar to your problem but it sounds like your on the right track to troubleshooting and I'm sure someone on here can help ya narrow it down. Good luck.
