So, here is a question that popped in my head the other day that got me wondering.

Personally, i dont care for smoke. it dirtys the truck (even a black one :D), pisses people off when your jsut trying to merge and doesnt help the environmetalist stay away from our sport.

Now mine, when it ran, hardly smoked with the twins and i loved that but it gave a good amount of smoke before the small turbo spooled up.

Now the question. Is that smoke/fuel nessacary to get a good spool up on the small turbo or is it waisted energy? i look at it as the stock trucks dont smoke to spool up but then again, they also aint pushing 500+ hp power levels. Is it needed to get heat in the pipes and spool up? if you were to tune that smoke out, would much slower spool up occur or would it be only take a little longer for the turbo to spool up?

It might be a simple, common sense answer im not thinkin of but my brain got rattled around pretty good tuesday :D

Timing... :D ....but I'm no tuner. I have one tune that smokes, the race tune. Used only at the track or on asshole drivers. Other than that the rest of the dsp is all clean tunes, even on a stock turbo. Dunno about big power guys though, might be different, especially when u throw turbos and bigger injectors into the mix.

my big tune smokes at launch, and is clean through all the gears afterwards. I love it that way. I would think the tuning for bigger injectors and bigger turbo would produce more smoke, but im no tuner either

James when you step up to big injectors it is also hard to tune all of the smoke out... For 700hp and under I would venture a guess that number can be made with extremely good efficiency. When 100 overs, and BIG single (75mm+) smoke on spool up is damn near inevitable

Lol i am nick. Im goin 45% overs when the motor comes out.

Im lookin at say my big tune thats around 550hp with twins. Is it possible to have no smoke off the start when i nail it and still have close to stock spool up, acceleration, ect. And if not, why?

When I had 45 overs my truck didn't smoke one bit. I felt like I lost some torque because I pulled alot of fuel out.

I just built a new tune for my truck tonight for this very reason. The other DD tune I built for it was a bit doggy at low rpms and didnt spool quick enough to clean up all the fuel going in. It was still pretty clean but needed some fine tuning.

I opened the vanes up a lot but left the fuel alone. End result was even quicker spool and almost "ZERO" smoke at an un boosted launch. Lost about 2 psi on the top end but it hits 42 psi fast and throttle response is close to a stock turbo with a healthy tune. It will smoke the tires if I stay in it.

I would like to swap these tables over to my race tune and see what happens.

James, I think you would have better luck tuning all the smoke out of a vgt equipped truck vs. a fixed turbo. Not saying its impossible on a fixed turbo but the control the end user has with a vgt is far superior.

now see thats what im tryin to get at. Why is the lose of torque there if there is any? is mroe dispacment needed for a more efficent burn at the lower rpms? What would need to be done?

i can completely see that but how does/did GM come to understand with such and such setup, we can get no smoke off the line? Thats probably why the limiter tables are there but in all honesty, what are you gaining by blowing all that fuel before spool up? Why not tune that out like you have done?im jsut curious as to "how come" so to speak.

James you know what my DD tune looks like. Pulled timing and fuel from a stock LBZ tune and it never smokes.:D

I also get 12mpg and have to floor it everywhere and turbo lights at 2500rpm :(

I've done a set of 100s that ended up smokeless and dyno'd 738hp if I remember correctly.

Excess smoke(fuel) in the lower end can actually hurt spool up. Quick spool demands heat and velocity, if there is too much smoke, you can actually 'douse the fire' so to speak.

The timing curve must follow parallel to the fueling curve otherwise you will get a nasty combination of smoke, rattle/knock, and very poor efficiency.

If I roll into my small tune it won't smoke at all but I can puff a nice lil cloud just by giving it more fuel then it wants. That's what I did love about my twins. On a 3000 pw tune I had zero smoke. We also didn't think it was that big of a tune but the rods thought diff. Its one of the reasons I might try out that Presion 67mm that Trent has when I get back to light even faster and clean up all the smoke. But we will see.

blowing smoke and lope tunes. Two of the stupidest things that I will never understand.

The only place where excess smoke is acceptable (to me) is the track, or for the rare time someone is being an asshole tailgater or something.

BTW, just how far should you start bringing pulse and timing down with larger injectors to eliminate smoke.....or is that a state secret?

That is the one only time I want any tunes to smoke, even at the track I dont want much I find it much more impressive to see a truck running clean or close too it down the track vs one pouring smoke.

I have a smoke tune for when I want to mess with my friends. What else are you going to do with 5 tunes? My other tune are pretty clean other then this time of year 100* with high humidity. I haven't tried but I doubt I going to be able to clean it up any without affecting the performance a bit and I haven't developed the self restraint to roll into it that easy.
