I'm trying to help a friend out who has an 05 3500 he uses for hot shot hauling. He called me up and said he had a P0046 code, brought it over, scanned it, and there was also a P2536 code stored in the ECM as well. I told him he should probably look for a turbo because it has about 30-40 thousandths of movement up and down in the impeller shaft, and the inside of the turbo is CAKED to beat all get out where the turbo position sensor goes in and solenoid(didn't pull the actual plunger out). So who has a good deal on just a stock reman? Or knows of a low milage take off? He isn't after any real power, just needs it reliable for hauling. The EGR has been blocked since 70K(currently has 240K) miles, EGR tuned out, and no added pulsewidth to it. Just trying to help him keep making money but get a GOOD turbo(not soem parts store junk). We cleaned the solenoid, and position sensor and got it working for him again, but I know it's only a matter of time bvefore it hangs up again. He's pretty puzzled how it has caked up so bad as he always idles it before shutdown, and does oil analysis on every oil change with no signs of problems.

As long is its up and down its not terrible. The in and out is what tells you to get it fixed asap. Is he using oil also?

not using any oil to speak of on 9k mile changes. i told him to go to synthetic because this truck spends everyday towing and loaded. i've washed my hands a dozen times now, and still cant get the burnt smell off from the crap we cleaned out of it. hes wanting to get another on hand so when it happens again he can change it out.

Ferman, Dawn dishwashing detergent works the best, I keep a spray bottle with a solution of about 15/85 mix and spray an dry my hands on a towel 4-5 times a day when working on my truck, makes the final day clean with Dawn and a small brush much easier..

Tried it, still wouldn't take the smell off. That coked oil mess was NASTY smelly crap. I'v ebeen into engines with an inch of pure baked on sludge in them, and the smell of them wasn't as bad as teh stuff we cleaned out of his turbo soelnoid and sensor.

Tell him to run synthetic oil for one change just to prove it will clean that junk out and stay cleaner. Mine was the same way and after a few hundred miles with junk Royal purple, my turbo guts were clean.

That reminds me of an LLY turbo I took apart. The turbine wheel was caked that I had to use a hammer to pound it out!! The journal bearings were also blue/purple/pink:eek::eek:
