On my car, we took the fenders down to flat color and then blended in with the hood. Body guy was adamant that even me as a non artistic person would see the glaring difference if we didn't blend.

Respray first and if it's close enough for you you're done. If not you have blend either way. You've already gotten the paint.

Sprayed out my test panel on Saturday. 50/50 old paint vs new mix. Think the paint store screwed up the first mix. they accidentally left the paint chip color card (which is straight from PPG) in my truck. its supposed to be the original color, BUT it doesn't match. it matches the new paint better.

Also after getting the hood out in the sun, think it would have been a difficult blend, its hard to describe w/o seeing it, but their first mix looks browner than the truck actually is. so even if the respray of the hood requires me to blend, it will be much easier with this new mix.

I'll say this though, this graystone metallic is a crazy color. you can look at it in different lights and different angles and it looks like different shades.

As a retired gm painter, you will have to blend. The factory never puts enough color on, never enough color to completely cover the sealer. Reason being cause of emissions. More color, more emissions.. You are actually seeing part of the sealer or the color of the base underneath the base coat. You are putting more basecoat on than they are. Usually the sealer is a lighter shade also. That's y if you look at the side of a dark side of truck in the sun, it will look blotchey. Sealer showing thru.

How did you decide to finish the edge on that HD hood where it meets your gmc headlights ? Did you roll the edge or fiberglass it or??

Thanks!

No glass, all metal here. I has to bend and shape a few pieces for each side too.

update on the paint- pretty sure the paint store I used totally f*cked me. I sprayed the second color and there is no way it would look good. its too light for the truck. I think the issue here is they mixed the original mix wrong and don't want to admit they screwed up. So they tried to give me a lighter color claiming my truck is probably faded. I'm sending my dad out to a different PPG shop today to hopefully get this squared away

The issue is ppg paint sucks with the new low voc laws .pick up some DuPont or basf,it will match better.I am using sickens now its the worst of them all fwiw.

Dupont has done the r+d for the colors so I have found them to have better color matches.i have been spraying water for close to 10 yrs now so the solvent is taking the back burner for the match end of things.I like DuPont paint but its my preference.start tinting your own color the best results.

I used to paint peterbilts and transfer dumps and my old man does classic car restorations. We switched from ppg to dupont and it was a huge difference, even the cheaper nason line from dupont is better than ppg imo. Just wondering why you mixed the two colors together? Did you not have enough?

I didn't mix the two colors together. I painted a test panel. sprayed half of it the original mix and half the new color. did this so I could compare to the truck.

Just got off the phone with my dad like 30 min ago. the new paint store(which I had used in the past but they moved over an hour away from me) confirmed that my truck should match the original color, not a variant. they also looked at the test panel I had sprayed out with the paint from the other store. they agree that the first mix was screwed up. so when I told them the first quart was too dark it wasn't the actual color that was too dark, it was their screwed up mix. had they mixed it properly the first time I would have been done with this weeks ago.

just sucks because not only has this stores screw up cost me all the extra money of buying more paint, but all the freakin time I am spending respraying this hood.

Here's a pic. Left side is my fender right is the new hood painted which the first store swore up and down would match.

Well hood was sprayed with the new paint on Saturday. Finally got it all buffed out and installed last night. damn near perfect match!

I cannot believe all the extra work and $$ this jackass at the paint store ended up costing me.
