what's the consensus on PPE's built short block?

i would be careful just bolting your billet flexplate to that engine. If the engine was balanced and weight was taken for the stock flexplate, a "lbz/lmm" billet flexplate might not balance out the same as the machined stock one that comes with the PPE. would be something to check with PPE on if you buy that engine.


also, i spoke to Guy a bit about the Manley Rods, He said he isnt sure their breaking point yet as he has never had one break. He assumes the Carrillo to be stronger but hasnt broken a Manley. Just throwing that out there FWIW.

I think the PPE short block would be just fine, but I prefer to have the short block short filled. Not something you can do after. Also you'd still need to have your heads checked. So there will be down time while you wait on the machine shop.

I think I would do the PPE shortblock, get your heads done buy a local shop n get it on the road! That's a actually a decent price for an ready to go engine built by a pro.

X2. Flexplate is included in balancing a rotating assembly on these motors.

PPE build or SoCal or a SoCal unit through a vendor, I'm sure you can't go wrong either way man. Have you contacted any site vendors about purchasing the PPE shortblock through them? Might be able to save some money that way. Steve (SSdieseltuning) is no longer selling tuning but he is very much still active in selling parts. Try seeing what he can get you the PPE vs the SoCal stuff for. He is a dealer for both!

I've only contacted vendors about having my block machined and having a custom build with an AF cam and Jon's ovals, I hadn't thought about getting a pre built short block until yesterday. So I figured I'd get everyone's opinion first and then call around

This has been a long time comin, we've been in this starter home for 10yrs when we had originally planned on being here for 3! Lol

The lift is going to be awesome! The garage doesn't have one yet but the ceiling height is almost 16' I will be putting the lift in, I actually was shocked to find out that they're only a couple grand, the one I'm looking at is $2098, new!

I have 5500$ in my short block.

Carillo's are the lightest. I just don't see enough value difference between them to use anything else. Also, Dustin's right about that flexplate, don't just go bolting it on to a short block.

I think I'll just keep the block stock and un-filled, I know there are strength benefits to filling the block, but I don't feel like I have the need for it

I feel allot more confident about taking this route now, and I have some very good considerations to be heeded.

Maybe I can get PPE to balance a block with my flexplate? I will absolutely get the heads check out too!

I imagine you'll all know when I make a decision/purchase, it won't be very long from now...

Well, for the most part it would seem like no one other than PPE has anything on the shelf and ready to go. Ive talked to Danville, DHD, Fleece and (didn't get a chance to call SoCal yet) even tho they're vendors for PPE buying a product like a short block through them isn't going to be priced any differently and shipping is more complicated and would probably be more expensive.

Using PPE might just be the best alternative for my situation. I've got a quote being worked up by PPE for a 16.5/1 CR short block, head surfacing and balancing with my flexplate. So we'll see just how much this will set me back.
Cool thing tho, they said it would only change the ship out date about a week! Then I'd have a fully assembled drop in ready to run engine delivered and ready to go!

Part of me is considering just buying a stock piston and replacing the damaged one for now until I get into the new house and then doing a full build, but most of me is sayin F that just suck it up and get it done and enjoy what I've got!

I'm tired of owning a broken truck!
Had it 3 years, started adding parts the first month, it's been tuned since the 3rd month I've owned it and it's been broken for one reason or another and out of commission for nearly 18mo of the total time I've owned it

One things fer sure, you can fix the truck but...
