What is the best ZF6 clutch for pulling?

Can't keep a SB clutch behind Dylan's MinaMax. Triple disk, dual disk, they've all only lasted one or two pulls before they are smoked. This is a stock motor with an S480 twin setup that dynoed 630hp on a mild tune and blown stock turbo, it was a dynojet 248 and it normally reads low.

We need something to hold, I don't care how much it costs.

Thanks,
Tim

not calling your buddy out but maybe its how he's driving it?? I've seen the TD take SERIOUS abuse but then i've seen guys with 300rwhp powerstrokes destroy big DD in a month.

You should not smoke a SBC DDD in two hooks unless you're making well north of 900hp. Jon was running a DDD and he was at over 1000hp. Something is seriously wrong if he is. I'm at 600hp and 1060tq and I'm leaving the line at 5000rpm and haven't had any issues with mine in prolly 20 hooks. I broke a output shaft on the trans at the last pull and a t-case at the pull before that and still no slippage on my DDD. I prolly made 30-40 hooks on my SBC DD and put 97K miles on it at 450-500hp before it ever slipped.

I have a SBC DDD sitting here that supposedly came out of a stock truck and it's smoked. If it was stock it was definately operator error

Our sled is heavy off the line, so it does take some slipping to get moving. I dont think its operator related, but is there a certain model, material, or setup that works best?

I'll post some vids up...I don't think its operator error but I don't know lol. It has held 4th gear ok, I take off around 4000 rpms....But I got the bright idea to try a fifth gear launch and that was it, pedal stuck to the floor. It ended up coming back after it cooled down, but pedal is soft and I smell burning when driving now lol.

Have you talked to Peter at South Bend and told him what you are doing with the truck. Ask him about the triple disc that Jon Swartzentruber is running in his puller.

I run a triple disc sintered iron with a weighted pressure plate. Peter told me personally that he rated mine to 1100hp. I believe it's similar if not the same as what Jon S has. Mine is not driver friendly on the street .

5th gear takes probably a good 750-800hp I'd say. If you have 315"s 5th gear might not work good either. I've made it work a couple times with an easy starting sled but don't make a practice of it. If I can find abother 150-200hp I'll try it again. I do know the SBC's don't like to be slipped very well. I try to spin the tires hard off the line but that can result in broken parts :(

What exactly do you mean by not driver friendly on the street?

It's really easy to stall the truck with this clutch. You can't slip it per say. Very minimal peddle travel where it releases. Like 2" maybe or less. When I buy another ZF truck for a daily driver again I'll stick to a dual disc with a sprung hub but for sledpulling I really like this triple.

I see. By sprung hub do you mean a dual mass fly wheel? and sorry for all the questions but honestly my area of expertise is in the engine compartment and thats where it stops:eek:

No they have springs in the disc hub that dampens the shock you might say. Similar idea to the DMF but keeps from having that shitty flywheel design.
