I use to say the same thing Chris, but then a few ideas were offered up that some people use to justify sled pulling is less abusive than drag racing. Not saying they are right, just an idea to ponder.

Drag racing short version: staging at the lights, building boost, letting go of the brake and launching, all 4 tires(or 3 if you have no front locker) hooking up and racing down the drag track. Then the thought of blazing down the track with 500,600,700+ horsepower on the allison transmission(assuming it is built) Sure the alli can handle that kind of power but for long.

Is holding power in 5th gear easy on the trans?

Sled pulling short version: Hold brake, build boost, roll into the throttle, release the brakes get to movin, wheels start spinning, down the track you go. If you have a good amount of power and the sun is alighed just right you will hit 4th gear.

Does the alli hold 500,600,700+ horsepower on the pulling track in 4th gear better than say on the drag track in 5th gear?

Food for thought.

how many trucks are built to run the "hero" 5th gear?

On the pulling track, I do not believe 5th gear is going to happen. But maybe it can, just because I haven't seen or heard of it doesn't mean squat. If you are talking about on the drag track I thought 5th gear was used on a regular basis...is it not?

talking on the sled useing 5th gear and 4L with 3.73/33" tires 30mph is 2100rpm
4th/4l @ 30 is 3000
3rd/4l @ 30 is 4000
right now you run 4th/ and 4l you got power

from what i have seen... trannies are breaking due to binding at the drag strip and breaking in/out put at the sled pulls

i'm going to say pulling is def the hardest on drivetrain.... you dont really see broken driveshafts etc drag racing (a lot less common anyways)

equally as hard on motors, i'd say each event lasts about the same amount of time.

drag racing is harder on tranny as there is nearly 0 wheel spin and your not in low range. the wheel spin in sled pulling makes it a lot easier on transmissions.

old rule i heard about sled pulls.... first 30 ft you see what soft parts will fail (clutches etc) last 30 ft you see what hard parts will fail (ujoints/ driveshafts twisting etc)

Again, I may be wrong but I believe you will be hard pressed to find anyone pulling that hits 5th gear.

I say you see more disasterous mistakes in drag racing, ie: too much spray, blown turbos, etc.

But the truck pulling a very heavy object at full throttle, just seems worse in my head.

Maybe i shoulda cast the hardest on my own sport, drag racin, we have torn up sh!t on our pro-mod running in the pits with basicaly no load:eek:
