What do you think caused this hole in my head?

Were they SoCal stage 1 heads? Ported on the intake side but nothing much on the exhaust side?

They were not Socal. The guy I bought them from did them himself with guidance from Guy and a local porter. He said they were like a stage 1 or maybe a hair better. The heads took a lot of punishment, I ran them for 3 years so I can't complain.

I had flashbacks to Bob and Doug McKenzie while listening to that announcer. "Take Off!" eh hoser?

Nothing to add about the hole in the head other than crack in surface seems logical, similar to cracking a piston. Weird that the piston has no damage. You'd think the valve head or stem would've done something to it.

Watching the video, it looks like it had a hiccup right before the big bang. Maybe the valve stuck open?

wouldn't the stuck valve screw the piston? You may be on to something though, she's only hiccuped like that the last couple pulls and I didn't know why.

Looks and sounds like a couple of bad things happened at the same time. Thinking the head had the hairline crack in it but the valve sticking open got it hot enough to open up and torch itself. Recently seen this happen on an old set of stg2 heads that have been beat on for 5 years, valves started warping and sticking open and it caused alot of running issues including the stumble or pop back through the intake that causes them to cough. Unfortunately at this power level they just don't last as long as they should!

Yes I have good people leading me in the right direction with out this site but there are some very smart people on here also. You can't just post all of the good things you do without posting some of the bad.

Thanks but I'm not suppose to listen to people on the internet. ;) It was a good run and at the power level it was at somthing was bound to happen. 3 seasons with out pulling the motor or trans, what more could you ask for. Thanks for all the help and great tuning Mark.

So are you saying their posts are just as worthless as yours?

Crap, better just call me then! Your right and it really jumped up this season in power, probably most powerful truck in the fleet until Tony's mod truck debutes. I don't think you could have asked for more out of it realistically and your welcome buddy, anytime!:thumb:

It looks like a crack behind the valve seat to me as well... Heat crack, casting flaw, who knows know they road signs are gone? But I don't think the valve was hanging up to cause it to burn up. As soon as the crack makes it all the way through from the cylinder chamber into the exhaust port, it is going to torch a big hole. Think off how much heat and cylinder pressure is in there just looking for a way out (think cutting torch).

Dave, was the valve sticky when you pulled it? See anything else funky with the other valves and seats?

It didn't seem sticky and I havn't really looked at the other valve seats. She gets up around 2000 degrees every pass.

i am not a proffesional engine builder by any means but I have seen something similar to this in aircraft engines. this looks like a crack/bad casting. it got hot enough to open that section up.
