I think the fass with the small micron filter is the main reason the truck has trouble in subzero temps. That cold fuel doesn't flow well through that filter.

Then there is that bio, that forms wax flakes when cold.

-10 on the thermometer in the truck on the way to work today with howes no problems, got to work and 3 people were late because of gelled up fuel when they got out on the highway. I poured howes in a few buddies trucks today. So howes vs nothing today proved itself.

It common for anti gells to gell when not mixed with fuel. That is one of the things I like about Howes. You don’t have to worry about it.

I’ve gelled on howes, white bottle power service, and regelled about 3 hours after dumping a bottle of 911 in. Only guaranteed way is straight #1 in my opinion.

Stanadyne gelled up on me on New years day, 911 got me going. Change filter and she runs like a top again, Looks like I 'll be switching to Howes

Anyone try the winter 1000 stanadyne? I've always just ran the performance formula without any issues, but my truck never sets out very often either

IDC what additive you use, if you have bio you are at risk of gelling. Buy a cheap wolverine fuel heater and forget about gelling. BD Diesel also makes a nice fuel heater. I have both, and gelling is a thing of the past! :D

Well second time this year and below Zero and she gelled up pretty good this go round. I am beginning to lean towards it being too small of a filter. This time i was using howes on a single dose. I currently am using a cat filter 1r-0750 which is a 2 micron filter, Should I step down to a CAT Filter IP2299 which is a 6 micron filter for winter uses or always double dose on the Howes?

I would double dose or maybe add a heater to the cat filter. If it doesn't make through the Cat filter it won't make it through the stocker. I'm just not sure that a less efficient filter would keep you from gelling.

Is your truck even starting or is it gelling while driving?

It's not the filters... It's your fuel blend. I lived in Alaska for 14 years in the interior, -50+. Never gelled but one time, I still had summer fuel in the truck and it hadn't been driven in a month, that happened last winter. I have run Cat water sep and 1r0749 filters for years and currently run a Cat synthetic media for high pressure common rails, much tighter with no gelling issues.

If your unsure of the quality or blend of the fuel then use plenty of your favorite fuel treatment...

Normally it would be while driving, but this go round it was about 5 minutes after a cold start.

+1

For the $10 a bottle I'd double or triple dose. Well worth not screwing around pulling filters off.
Can extra doses hurt anything? Last time I fueled up, about a week ago it was 20, then was up to 40 for a couple days then temp dropped like a stone back to around zero.

The emergency anti gels are the ones you really don't want to overdose on.

I’ve seen guys do a 1:1 on their filters when they gel up, in my opinion it’s on the same level as ether as far as harmful.

We use to mix in up to 40% gas in our diesel tank on the farm in emergencies in the winter. Never had fuel system issues, but we didn't make a habit of it.
