What are my options? Diff question

Were taking apart my front diff so we can weld the spider gears. Ran into a problem, the carrier is stuck to the drivers side stubby shaft. I mean its stuck! I went through the vent hole hitting the ring gear with a long punch and 3lb hammer. I guess the splines are twisted or something cause it wont budge. Is there a special puller that someone would make?

Heres about the only option we came up with, it would cost a new DS stubby shaft. I'm not sure if it would work or not though. Thinking to cut the flange off of the stub shaft right at the outside of the case. Would that allow the carrier to fall out, along with the DS short shaft ofcourse? Or is there like a snap ring on the inside of the case that wouldnt allow the shaft to slide through??? If we could get the carrier to come out we could pull the cross pin, then press the short shaft out the carrier from the ring gear. Even if there was another option, it would be just as much of a pain to get back on as coming off I would think. Should I try this and then find a used stubby shaft? Or just look for a complete used front differential?

Any thoughts or added ideas

I had that happen to me on a half ton front diff. There is snap ring that holds it in, on mine the snap ring wouldn't compress. I got it out by chaining around the diff and pulling on the axle shaft with a forklift. Wasn't pretty but it worked.

If all your trying to do is get it welded up you can just do that thru the "vent port" on the side. I have done several like that with no problems. If you really do want to get it apart cutting the flange might be the only way to go. There is a little c clip that sits in a groove that gets caught coming out. 9 times out of 10 they get caught. But if you have not cut it yet just weld it up thru the port.

Good luck!

on the inside of the shaft, just behind that cross pin in the diff, there is a c-clip that is suppose to compress down when you try pulling the axle out. like others have said, 9/10 times it dont work. We did everything short of pulling the diff out on my buddys truck to change his axle seal and never got the axle out. slide hammers, come-a-long, big hammers, never did hook the fork lift to it though. wound up leaving it and he sold the truck not long after.

if you cut the flange off, the carrier should come right out, then pull the cross pin and see if you can collapse the c-clip and press the rest of the axle back out.

Between going through the vent and around the ring gear I was able to slide the cross pin out far enough to get a good sized bar in there to get a good square hit on the stub shaft with a good sized hammer. The stub shaft popped right out after a few hits but the c clip came out in pieces.

I wont be able to clean it enough to weld it properly with the carrier still in there oil soaked. Plus I dont have a stick welder to get in there, won't be able to see a thing with a mig. Or get as much weld coverage as I'd like. I'd hate to do a have ass weld on it then break it, that would send alot of parts flying.

Would a differential housing spreader too help you? If its a retaining ring thats holding you up I don't believe it will but if its just a stubborn case. You should be able to bolt up a spreading tool and crank a few times and your case with the ring gear should fall out.

I got it out. Used a big ass hammer and a long chisel. Put lots of dents in the flange to show how stuck it was. It chewed up the splines on the stub half 1/2 inch side splines. But filed them so they slide in and out of the carrier fine again. Now just gotta get a new clip and find some eyther to clean it up for weld prep. Was a SONOFABITCH lol
