Weird issue in the cold

Hey guys the last couple times it was really cold I'm talking 0 degrees I would go start the truck not plugged in after work and it would smoke like crazy smelled like fuel so I looked at the balance rates and number 3 was at 7 but after like a minute it came back down and ran around .8 the rest of the day. It also had a rough idle and a lil bit of a lope. It only did this on a cold start when sitting. If I plugged the truck in it doesn't do this. The only code I have is for a MAF sensor that I can't get figured out P0102. Any ideas would be great. Other then this the truck runs and drives fine.

That's called a cold start. Obviously pug it in when you can but I wouldn't worry about it

I would have thought that too but it didn't do this last year so it kinda worries me a lil. Manly the one injector and the rough idle is different as well so I thought I would ask to see if I may need to look for something wrong

Have to use a tech 2, I'm not sure if you can check for glow plug codes with a v2 or not. Or from what I seen on mine and the sounds of his, check balance rates at cold start up as those cylinders will be the highest due to no heat.

The v2 will check glow plug codes on the LBZs. You could also check each one with a volt meter by checking the resistance. IIRC if they are bad they read like 80+ I think good ones are below 10.

Back to the OP is your tuning new this year? There are several adjustments that can be made for cold weather. If your tuners doesnt know what hes doing these could of been missed. I dont know who PPEI is....

No my tuning is not new been running it for like 35,000 miles. PPEI is Kory Willis. I will check the glow plugs with a meter but I know I have no glow plug codes at this time.

Had the same thing with my lbz and it was a bad glow plug. No codes but when I ohmed them I had 1 that was open. Replaced it and the cold miss went away.

Well if the GP checks out fine you might get a log of it and see if there is an issue and then he can tweak it some. Im guessing 35K means you had this same tuning last winter.

Yes actually the last 2 winters and this is the 1st winter I'm having some interesting issues.

Well finally got some time and decent weather to check the glowplugs. All of them are around 1.8 to 2.9 ohms except for the number 3 cylinder plug it was at 61 ohms. I'm gonna guess that's bad so I am going to change that one this weekend and see if the starting improves. Thank you guys for the help and ideas.

Sounds like you found your problem. Hope the glow plug fix goes well. I usually let them engine get to full operating temp before I try to get them out.

Why would you end up doing all of them? I know of several lbz that only get one done at a time. Once I had 2 go in one year the rest have been every year or 2.

Cheap insurance vs $, when one is going the others aren't far behind.

Just helped a friend and he started at one, and ended up replacing all of them(eventually).
