Well im balls deep in this now and am wondering if the Y bridge has to come off to get the cp3 out. Right now im fighting with the 3 bolts that hold the cp3 on. Anyone with some experience mind givin me some tips? If the Y bridge does come out i dont see how in the world you can get to the last 2 bolts closest to the turbo

I had to take my turbo out to get the bridge out on my built motor. Everyone says you don't have to but I've never dealt with any trucks other then the LMM. I could have also put something together wrong when I put the motor in my truck but who knows. It's a crap job no matter how you look at it. Took me over 8 hours one day to do it but it was my first time doing it in the truck.

You should be able to pop the inlet pipe on the y bridge out and have plenty of room to pull the cp3. If not then you have to pull the turbo before you can remove the y bridge. My turbo and y bridge were already out when I pulled my cp3 so it wasnt a problem.

I agree with everyone else, you will need to pull the y-bridge. I also had to pull the 2 front studs that bolt the Y bridge to the runners. The back ones are aren't necessary, but the front ones will make it much easier for the cp3 to come out. You also mentioned the "3 bolts that hold the cp3 on" I have done a couple cp3 swaps on my 06 LBZ, and both of my 01 and 02 LB7's. All 4 trucks have had 4 bolts that hold the CP3 on. If you only take 3 out, and try to pry the CP3 out, it will come out, but you will break the ear off where the 4th bolt mounts the pump...

Good luck, and if you want to give me a call, I could probably help out if you are stuck 757-477-2182

Thanks,
Robb

There should be 4 to remove that go from the front of the engine to the CP3. If you're trying to remove the 3 at the rear of the cp3, it won't come out. Those hold on the adapter the cp3 itself. Even if you were to remove the 3, the Gear on the front of the cp3 wouldn't make it past the adapter.

Well thanks for everyones help, too much for me im done working on duramax forever. Everything on this engine is a pain in the ass to work on compared to my cummins. Think i'll take a road trip to diesel addiction instead and let them put it on and do injectors and trans at the same time.

Your giving up?! Its not that bad, I have learned when it comes to these engines if its in the way remove it. You will be more flustered and pissed off if you try to fight and wiggle past all the crap that gets in the way. You will be time and patience ahead if you just accept this fact. Good luck!

Why would you put a huge cp3 on with a stock trans?

Cause my stock transmission hasn't thrown too much of a fit yet

Yea i put it back together yesterday, just too much shit to take off. I was feeling pretty good about it till i got to that Y bridge, thats just rediculous. My patience gets very thin quick with stuff like that.

It wasn't necessary to remove the turbo when I did mine. A 1/4 in drive, 6 or 8 in long extension is your best friend, and as mentioned before a wobble joint really helps. A lil trick I always use when you are going back with the little bolts/nuts is to put a piece of blue shop towel over the head of the bolt/nut, then put the socket over it, tear off the excess, and that will save you so much trouble. Don't forget to drill out ur rail fittings while ur at it. If you ever decide to upgrade ur y-bridge to a RDL or a solid piece, it's a good idea to move the studs on the bottom rear of the intake runners to the bottom front, you'll be glad you did! Wish u were closer I would love to help ya!

It isn't that bad but hey if you aren't comfortable doing it there's nothing wrong with that

Did mine last weekend and honestly would of done the same thing, but I had some buddies there that wouldn't let me lol. Then my one argued that I had to take the 3 bolts out of the back and the cp3 would come out. Well it only came loose a little so I pried on it and cracked the gear. :) It's all back together now though and I'm glad I did it, live and learn I'll never crack that gear that way again!
