While having the steering box replaced on the truck my mechanic noticed that the water pump was leaking out the weep hole. I will be replacing it next weekend after I gather up the new parts needed but I had a couple questions.

What else do you guys replace when doing this? I was thinking maybe the thermostats and reservoir cap along with all new coolant. Truck has 187,000 miles now and this will be the second time I replaced the water pump. I don't remember which pump I used last time as it had to happen quickly to get the truck back on the road so I used the only one we could find in stock on a Saturday morning.

I've read about welding or pinning the shaft. I will be welding the shaft of whatever pump I choose but I was curious what pump the big name shops started with before they modified them. Nobody has said in the descriptions which pump use.

I will probably be ordering an ac delco replacement pump and welding that one h less someone has a better suggestion.

The best pump you can get is Danville's pinned shaft cast impeller, pump.
I believe the impeller is from an LB7, not sure on that? I know at some point (thought 05.5 LLY and up) GM switched the cast impeller found in the pump, for a plastic one...

The shaft is hardened steel, so unless you've got the proper machining equipment, I don't think you can tap it, I know I remember reading someone saying it was impossible...just FYI

Thanks for the info. I know Danville has a great pump. I'm going to buy one and weld the shafts myself. Just wondering what pump shops used before they welded them.
