I have a sbc in my 86 chevy truck I would like to wake up alittle. Right now it has a edelbrock performer intake. 650cfm edelbrock carb, headers dual exhaust, double roller timing chain, 268 comp cams cam. I don't know what year the engine is because the truck was a 4.3 from the factory. Im guessing the engine is around 8.5 to 1 compression. I really don't want to go into the bottom end. Anyone have any advise on heads, cams, intakes, carbs etc. I am carbed gas engine dumb. Was thinking about this kit. Seems pricey though? And then I would have to change the lifters and rockers. http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/2099/10002/-1?parentProductId=#moreDetails Not sure if its doable but would like to get 400+ hp without changing short block parts. Not sure if thats even possible but would like to try.

IMO a 650 should be big enough. You could always go bigger on the cam with no compression increase but tq will suffer, and you can run higher compression with that cam but you may run into detonation problems. You will first need to find casting #'s on the heads and figure out how big the chambers are and start there. You can hand port a set of iron heads with 2.02 valves and make more than enough power. There isn't too many ways to make power, either bump displacement or bring in more air and squeeze it tighter.

Do you want to run a lower octane gas or prem?

I was thinking scrap the cast heads thats on it for a good quality alumn head. Do a head, cam, intake change. I would run prem if I had to. Def want to stay pump gas though. If I do forced induction it will def be turbo'd. Heres a couple pics of said truck.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GT45-5PC-TU...es&hash=item3f37d84f3f&vxp=mtr#ht_6409wt_1105 I thought about this kit. Don't know how cheap the pieces are nor do I know anything about this company. The thing that kinda sucks is im not sure if the crossover pipe will clear the front axle. Go with a simple blow through carb. Good mechanical fuel pump. Should make some decent power. The exh and intake would be cake to make. Im just scared of how cheap the kit is.

Ok that just got my attention... Im very curious on the quality, might be a cool option for my 69 burb tow rig..

Gotta be something off about it.

I built a 355 with my step dad when I was 18 for my 71 pickup.

Used Keith black flat top pistons
Dart iron eagle 2.02 - 1.60 heads
Edlebrock performer intake
Lunati cam
650 cfm carb

Sounds amazing, tons of torque, however I found out about 3 years after I built it that dart makes 2 styles of 2.02 - 1.60 heads and mine have the smaller intake runners and won't support airflow over 4500 rpm.. Never dreamt that they would build something like that. I never worried about turning a bunch or rpm.

If I could do it all over again I would swap in a cammed up 6.0 ls engine. Have less money in it and it would run better

I have a real soft spot for 86's. It was my first truck. Two tone, charcoal top and black rockers. I loved that thing! Always wanted to do a turbo'd LS in one.

That's a straight truck for sure :thumb:

If it were my truck, I'd be doing a diesel swap, but second choice would be a mild SBC like yours.

First I would pull the heads, make sure you know what size bore/piston combo you're working with and find out the cc's on the heads. I wouldn't get too excited about going aluminum on the heads, plenty of power on tap with ported cast iron heads. Even 1.94 intake valve can support a good street motor! Swap in a cam that will support your power needs and bump compression up with a smaller chamber head if you can.

Its hard to do exactly what you want when you only have half the puzzle to work with.

You could go with 2.02 / 1.60 aluminum heads with 64 cc combustion chambers to bump the compression. Also the intake runners will flow more dependant on which heads you select. The aluminum heads will handle detonation better than a cast head. I would go aluminum heads and roller rockers @ a minimum.

Right, Just like the article did. went to 64cc heads compared to the stock 76cc heads and bumped the comression up a full one point. IMHO this is just a fun beater project. I would be more than happy with a reliable 400hp. That is really my goal. A very streetable usable 400hp sbc. If money and time could swing it a diesel swap would happen. Not now though.

Before I went LS I had a 355 with flat tops, patriot alum heads, super victor, 750 demon, comp xe274 cam with 1.6 rollers. It needed a lot of stall though. For budget I would run a set of modified vortec heads, good cam, intake, roller rockers, and carb and it would b a lot of fun.

TPI from the Camaro or Corvettes, the carburetor will do better at maximum rpm but the TPI has all around better performance in the rpm range over the carburetor

I've got a tune port system on my 355 in my 71.. If I had a good carb intake / carb I would throw the tpi in the dumsta.. It does always start good though, I just hate it. Can't find anyone to tune it anymore.
