Anybody every been to a german manufacturing facility? No money wasted on excess safety features, lawyers, lawsuits, etc etc for people not taking responsibility. My parents asked the tour guide why nobody had safety glasses or why there wasnt a gaurd on the one shear. He said safety glasses are optional. You get something in your eye, your problem. Same goes for the shear. Theres a sign above it saying it will pinch you, you should learn the operation of each machine before running it. If you fail to do either of the following and stick your hand in there, that is your own problem. None of these negligence lawsuits because people just want a check. Number one thing that pisses me off everyday. Im always thinking in the back of my head look at how much more money they had to waste on this or that to keep OSHA happy. I am all for safety features that are there to keep you safe for uncontrollable things, but having to retard proof every little thing gets pretty bad.

Great post

Yep one job we are doing mandatory No slip on boots, long sleeves and can't roll up the sleeves. Tell me how many people get injured every year, because they have on short sleeves and cowboy boots? A 40hr OSHA class which I have never had and been in this industry for 11 years working everywhere from the back 40 to military bases and chemical plants. This isn't a chem. plant or anything where there is some reasoning its just the customer policy. Then they are paying for the staff to make sure we fallow the rules.

Holy shit durallymax, you hit the nail on the head. :thumb:

Oh, and speaking of Germany, guess who no longer does business there? That's right people, Wally world. They could not provide what the German people wanted so they sold all of their stores to Real (pronounced Ray-all). I miss Germany so much, hopefully get to move back there someday.........

Where's ur proof it won't? If Walmart went away there would still be places to buy items. Check out average Costco wages compared to walmarts. And walmarts CEO pay compared to costcos. Walmart is just a Shit company period. Edit: did u mean proof? Or prof. Like profession?
I would suport Costco if in our area that guy gets a ton of respect from me

I know it makes some people feel really good inside to blame Walmart for this and or for that but did any of you guys stop and think of how many products on your trucks are made in China? And please, don't give me the patriotism speal....

And to the guy who talked about amazon.com, I have bought my fair share of those evil China products from there as well. So are they bad too or just Walmart?
I have pro's and cons about W/m.Cut w/m head off and buymart or whatevermart will pop up next week, they took advatgae of something. What i dont like are the shitty marketing loose money on certain things (hook items) and charge you hard on others while your there.when Sam walton can to town in my area before the old cout died,He always said he wouldnt have beer and smokes in his stores because he believed in clean living, there was beer and smokes forsale right up till he got here then it all disappearedhe came here and left and it all reappaired.Did the guy even know what was going on in his own company????Do you know if walmart has a bad day they solely effect the gross national product buy 1 to 2 %.

Costco special was on CNBC last night and guess what, after you factor in the membership costs you as a consumer are not really saving any money especially after you factor in throwing away the food you bought in mass quantity. Not my words so try not to flame me. But again, people feel warm and fuzzy so they don't want to think about it that way. ;)
I still like costco and the owner he pays his people decent offers good prices and still stays competitive.W/M could do the same and still make a killing but they fill their pockets instead of providing a little better jobs.

Proof oops

So none of us have any proof of anything and this whole thread is pointless and is here just so we can rant about WM. If the wages are so bad the why would anyone work there? You can't tell me its that much harder to get a job at Costco then WM. If no one would take a job for what WM was paying then they would up the wages. Don't give me that BS about there not being any jobs. People where working for WM when unemployment was 4% too.

(This is very ture)

Heck at least there is some car audio stuff made in the US. I know people that have attempted the whole buy only things made in the US thing. Well it didn't go to well after through research they found most things where made out right, shipped to for assembly, or had parts from other counties.

You know there is something wrong when you can grown the ingredients for a granola bar here ship them to china to have the bars made. Then ship them back for cheaper they they can be produced here. Maybe those great wages we all want have something to do with it? The fact is low skill jobs get low skill pay.

I don't love WM, but I shop there. I have better things to do them go to several stores for things I can get at one place. And I don't buy cheap crap there. If there is a better quality item for a fair price somewhere else even if its more I will buy it. Unless its not worth the trip. Like groceries where brought up. Yep other place have sales, but there other items are high enough to make the sale not much of a deal. I'm not going to 3 different grocery stores with a stack of coupons for a deal.
You have to blame the government for going to china for everything, they allow it, 1 of the only reasons i voted for that dumbass running this country is he said he was going to bring the jobs back from china. After the P O S got elected you never heard another word.My wife worked for Sunstrand,an aerospace company owned buy United technologys. They make alot of stuff for the milatary and commercial airplanes along with other sensitive things,my wife made the intergrated drives for electrical generation for the new airbus the joint strike fighter the raptor every military plane.Know where its made now?SIGNAPORE thats bullshit and do you think that they lowered their price of what they charge just bullshit. How can you make sesitive things for the military in another country. The over haul part off these drives went to france and at 1 time i was trying to get my wife and her co workers together and get set up here to do the overhaul but the cost where way to much for a little guy like me.

I didnt have time to watch the video, but do have mixed feelings on the issue.

I tend to look at things from many angles, but a lot of times see things from a business owner perspective. In that case, Wal-Mart is a pioneer, innovator and has changed the world in just as many good ways as bad ways. What Wal-Mart did was respond to consumers when others weren't. No law against it, something a lot of business owners doing. I really don't ever blame one company for giving people what they want. I really seriously just blame americans.

I seriously hate our countries plain laziness. I see it all to often with the farm. Everybody complains about the hispanics moving here and establishing jobs, families and careers. The fact of the matter is that any american could have that job if they wanted it, but they all feel they need $20/hr to pull a tit. Not going to happen, its a low skill job. I dont care if you have a PHD, your milking a cow you get payed according to your job. If you are living on nothing and think your too good for the job and then complain that the migrant worker got it, your a hypocrite. The migrant worker has no advantage over you other than they will accept appropriate pay for the job, they will work the required hours per week (typically 50-60 max) and will show up as well as take responsibility if they don't. Look at diabeaties on a world map it covers america and is in canada, then look at the other countries.1st i must tell you i am not lazy at all and i do have stage 1 diabeaties i believe mine was handed down as every male in our family gets it.As far as laziness i think the diabeaties tells a story IMO.On the flip side.Come on migrants work for rice or beans and the American cant or wont competeIn aisa where they build Niles for 14 cents and hour and 16 cents an hour for ot back in the day it took 5 95 to make a set of Air jordans that sold for 120 to 200 a pair. There are somethings you can compete over in the work force and some you cant.A migrat might pull tits for 3 or 4 an hour is thatr rite? i guess if you own the cow lol.

I just don't like people that sit around and whine because they don't feel they should be held accountable for their actions. Everybody wants their handout. They all feel they are "too good" for many jobs.

I have always seen Germany as my idol I guess. The reason being is that everything I buy from there is the most precise, well engineered, well tested, and overall well designed piece of whatever it is I may be buying. From tools to cars to farm equipment, its just all better as a whole. And the price isn't terrible. Generally higher though.Agreeed

A little off topic, but related in a roundabout way. Many americans feel they should be able to work 40hrs per week with no other skills other than AB (simple one task operations) and be able to have a household income over $100,000. Then there are those who get the college degrees and feel entitled to big pay and a job. Bottom line is that you still have to fight for your job or somebody else will take it. They say over 50% of people hate their jobs. How does that help our country. i could never go to a job everyday and hate it. I wouldn't get anything done. I don't get it. The sense of hard work has gone away. Somewhat unrrelated but I always laughed at the guys I know who sit in the weight room lifting weights all day pounding down all kinds of supplements so they can look big and tough. For what? You tell them to go lift something other than a weight and they can't apply their strength they don't know how to use it. Then you have them try to work on a truck or something in a tight engine compartment and they're too big to fit in there, and still cant break the bolts loose that are out in the open.Cant get on people for working out and staying healty some go over the top in my oppinion but thats their choice

Im not saying everybody should have a labor intense job. its more of a metaphor
All this shit is my take on things take for what its worth

This!!!!! We have a large population of migrant workers here and really if trained to do the job properly they will do it right, work their ass off doing it and not let up till it's time to go home for the appropriate wage. They make life work on low income and appreciate what they have and are given. Really a lot of local farms probably would have went under if not for the affordable help they get from the immigrants we have here.

I saw that film in 2009. 3 months later I was in Indy for a race. While sitting at Wendy's chowing down my spicy chicken, I noticed we were in an abandoned WalMart parking lot. In the SAME strip mall, but around the corner, there was a brand new WalMart. It really sunk in then.
I'm not against the cheap Chinese stuff, or the jobs...I'm against what they do to the towns they occupy. I just watched it happen to my town in the last 3 years.

It is still a free market and there a lot of companies (small and large) that thrive with Wal-Mart. The same argument applies to Wal-Greens, Dollar General, Target, and on.

It's a simple choice to vote for or against Wal-Mart with your dollar.

I have spent 9yrs working on the Wal-Mart retail account, both for suppliers and for Wal-Mart directly. They have plenty of challenges to overcome. Show me a business or company that does not.

Didn't read every post as it went off to farming and other topics and don't know if it's been mentioned but whether it's Walmart or any big box store it's the same what it's done to smaller resellers.

It was the same when Home Depot came to town it shut down all the small lumber yards. Ditto when Auto-Zone and Advanced came to town it shut down all the smaller auto parts stores. Sucks but it's the sign of the times. Buying in volume drives down prices as it's suppose to do where as smaller venues can not compete.

As far as the China playground in Walmart it's the consumer driven elected Government that allowed this to happen by pushing companies out of this country by the cost of doing business and environmental issues. If your a business owner you should know between utilities and insurance it's a KILLER! Workers comp alone cost me $4500 dollars per man I have working on my floor in my industry. Combine that with taxes it's not greed it's common sense.

Textile and electronics were pushed out do to environmental issues. Which boggles my mind as it's ok to pollute elsewhere but not here were as I feel they should have worked with these companies to clean up their act instead of pushing them away!

There is no easy answer to this issue other than do your best to support what is left here and vote for a better balance in trade of durable goods.

Walmart is not destroying America, America is destroying America.

We're living in a country that has grown to rely on the 'give it to me now' attitude and the 'it must be cheap enough for ME to buy now'. It's easier to give our children video games or TV as a baby sitter, rather than make them go outside and see nature. Each next generation grows in the lax attitude, and we find it easier to think that the generation before us had it easier when in truth we are the catalyst that have created the effects arround us.

We live in a country that we have created by both our actions, and in some cases inactions. You all complain about the taxes, the price of gas, or even the price of milk. Rather than be proactive and actually do something about it (reduce consumption, etc), we let ourselves become accustomed to it and move on.

Why? Because it's easier. After all, who are we to tip the boat of the status quo? Walmart, Kmart, Target, none of them are perfect. They provide a service that we as Americans require and DEMAND. Some help communities by trying to give back to them. The rest of the world calls it progress, others call it a destruction of values.

As for replacing walmart with small local stores... that isn't going to help our economy at all. Walmart's key differentiation is efficiency... they reduce the overhead required to operate a retail store by centralizing a lot of the administrative tasks that go along with running a business. Thousands of independently owned small stores is the opposite. If you want to compete with China, we're going to have to build 10,000 factories with 100,000,000 workers willing to work for $0.10/hr. That's why China is "beating" us.

The now now now attitude is good and bad. Its driven us to create large effecient distributions system. I'm a farmer. We cannot wait until next week or even tomorrow for a part for the forage harvester. When it goes down, thats a couple thousand dollars an hour between all of the labor and equipment sitting idle. Add to that the fact that harvest is time sensitive due to weather. Rain may.be on the way, or maybe we had a field of hay get away from us and get a little too dry making it impossible to get through the chopper leading to a compound effect of loosing money. I drove a few hundred miles to a distribution center just to get a part for our chopper because two days was too long.

The bad now now attitude is how people how no concept of financial planning it seems. While I do believe in a dollar not invested is a dollar wasted business wise, in peoples personal lives its a little different. Putting that 60" tv on credit is not going to make you any return. However I have nothing against it, as long as managed properly. Too many people can't live within their means and have little to no financial knowledge.

I was car shopping with my gf and all of this really became obvious when taking to the salesman. We told him we'd think about it and get back to him. He didn't seem to understand the concept of thinking about the numbers for a bit. He asked what it would take for us to take it home tonite. I gave him a number that we needed to.be at out the door for it to be a no brained. They came back a little cheaper but nowhere near our number. I miss the days of negotiating. Everything is all set priced now.

When we walked in he asked what she wanted for monthly payments. When he cane back with the price the actual price was low but when I added it all up, it was a ripoff and actually higher. They don't show you the finance rate anymore on their quotes. They just push that they met your monthly goals. I tolf him it was too much money, tgey just keep insisting they met your monthly goals. I said its too much money overall, can you not add the difference another year of payments add. I asked him what the finance rate was and he would always say he didn't known even told me there wasn't one at one point. I laughed at him and said fine your going to wait for me to figure it out since your being a pita. Came out to 15% , laughed at him and left. Bought the car from another salesman at a different location a week later.

Sad thing is that so many people fall for that stuff everyday because they all want it now and don't take the time to think about it.

A lot of great points here...The one I agree with the most is the self entitlement of most Americans. I see this all the time with people coming in looking for a job.

Who ever said "laziness" your dead on. Everyone wants something for nothing. The real problem is its more than "wants" average person actually believes its owed to them for some reason.

I remember when I was about (started working for my dad when I was 10) 12 getting a job at a body shop. Did I get paid yes. I got paid by being able to be there and learn from the guys in the shop. I swept, took out garbage, and cleaned bathrooms even just to learn. It later turned into me being able to detail cars and even do some light body work. Worked there for the summer. Eventually I even made some money wasnt much but more than that learned a skill that helped me start my first business.

A few summers ago I had a mom and her son come in to the shop wanting to know if the son could work for the summer. He really wanted to get into car audio. He was 14/15 and didnt really know anything but was ready to learn. I was thinking I might be able to let the kid hang out and show him some stuff if he would be willing to do some cleaning and what ever. Just like I started out. Before I could even suggest this the mom and her son both were wanting to know how much an hour I would be able to pay him....This was the very next thing out of there mouths after asking for the job.

I simply replied with pay him for what??? Does he have any skills? Does he have any 12v electrical knowledge? Does he know anything about cars at all? What am I going to get for paying him? They both looked at me like I was crazy and honestly answered with he will work here. I had to stop the conversation and tell them we were not hiring at the moment.

Had another guy working for me that was paid base plus commission. Didnt even have to come to the shop if he wasnt working and was still getting paid. We had a few good weeks were he had to work 50/60 hours so he was making good money. Commission was 35% plus his base pay. He saw that I had made a decent check of those two weeks and actually came in wanting more money. I guess he forgot about the weeks that I paid him more than he brought in because of his base pay. Not to mention all the overhead I pay daily.

It would blow your mind to see the people and how they come in asking for a job. What ever happened to getting dressed up or at least presentable. Making a resume and turning it in to the manager/owner. I get phone calls almost every week with people asking if I am hiring....NOT YOU you cant even get off the couch to come in and ask!

Blows my mind...

This isnt anything new. Im 37 and have been saying Wal Mart is destroying this country for 15 years or longer. To bad 90% of the people in this country just care. As long as they can get it cheaper and faster they will walk around with blinders on not paying attention to anything but there own lives.

Everyone in the entire country could watch this video and Wal Mart would be the biggest retailer in 2013. Nothing would change...

No different than Amazon and numerous online stores as well. How fast and how cheap can I get it....the new American way. As a business owner I deal with this every single day.

i own a napa auto parts, i agree with your post 100%... cheaper and faster is puttin me out of business..

Costco special was on CNBC last night and guess what, after you factor in the membership costs you as a consumer are not really saving any money especially after you factor in throwing away the food you bought in mass quantity. Not my words so try not to flame me. But again, people feel warm and fuzzy so they don't want to think about it that way. ;)

What did I say about costcos savings? I was talking about how they great their employees.

Yes rob that's a different point that somewhat supports mine. You work in the usa for a german company not in Germany. The usa is the one with all of the laws. German companies are smart and determined. They are very detail oriented and not lazy. Other American companies may complain and get grandfathered or be very lax on rules, the Germans just do what is needed to meet the laws.

Myself being mostly German as well as my entire family on one side being full blooded German, and through some observations of the country, I feel Germans biggest flaw is their reason for success. Very stubborn, strict and controlling.

I guess I just always feel them, and many other European companies just seem light years ahead of us. Seems like they have everything figures out while we are struggling with power struggles, laziness and overall disorganization.

GM was the worlds largest automaker by volume last year. Their profits were 7.6 billion. VW was the largest by profit though at 25.8 billion. How? Their vehicle pricing is generally a little higher on some brands, but the actual VW cars are a very good deal. You get what you pay for. Attention to detail, scrutinized quality control, high quality cars.

My 2000 Jetta is tighter and quieter than my gfs 2006 mustang.

Control freaks really.describes Germany to me. Take Claas for example. They make forage equipment. They have the.most sales of forage harvesters world wide. In the US we have john Deere, krone, Claas and new Holland as the big 4. We had a Deere. While it is built in Germany, it doesn't carry that German engineering.

Claas is owned by a woman and her heirs. They make all of their own parts. They need quality.and specific parts. They don't sacrifice. They do partner with trusted company's such as Daimler and linde. Their units typically run more than $100,000 more that I comparable Deere units, even with that big of a price difference, the quality and productivity is worth it. Everywhere you look on the machine you see a little idea here and there. Everywhere on the Deere you were left wondering why did they do it this way.

I think the Germans, while controlling, allow a lot more opinions into their designs. Americans like to think its their way it the highway, it shows in their products. They also won't admit defeat. Deere would always tell us that ours was the only chopper breaking.a at the meetings for our Claas they dont.skate around anything. They come out and say here's where.we screwed up and why, heres how to fix it. Often times at no charge.

Same goes for Fendt versus the us tractors.

Heck rob I'm sure you've got a pair of knipex somewhere. Can't even explain the quality built into each pair of them Nd reasonably priced.

They listen. They give people what they want but refuse the sacrifice quality. Its the main reason they have built the image of the highest quality. Made in Germany ranks above made in USA to many people in any sort of mechanical world. Made in japan is right up there too sometimes beating USA. Other European countries such as Sweden and italy have a name that goes with quality as well.

i own a napa auto parts, i agree with your post 100%... cheaper and faster is puttin me out of business..

Really? Napa doesn't always.have the highest quality.on some of their cheaper lines.. but its like anything you get what you pay for.

We do 35-45,000 a year in business with our local Napa. That number is starting to dwindle as I find better.sources.but the thing I have always likes about Napa was convinience. One stop shop, everything is there and prolink makes thongs very easy.

Car parts they aren't too bad on most if them. Filters aren't terrible either. But things like shop supplies and tools are pretty pricey if you shop around, but it goes back to its easy. Its easy to.get everything all started with.them.and the. Restock with better prices and or quality when there.is.time to shop around. That's part of the price though. The help of a great jobber and great distribution network. Makes life easier.

Blame the gov for what having a free market and international trade? If someone builds it better and faster at the same cost or cheaper then you can thats where you go to get it.

I don't think you thought this diabetes thing through to well. Doesn't it make more sense that we have the best healthcare system in the world and that they might be just a little bit better at dineocing things then 3rd world countries?

I'm not sure why people work there, but its the truth about the wages, u can Google that. None the less I don't shop there, I try to support my local small town stores as much as possible, it cost me a little more, but that's fine.

Weather or not its the truth isn't the point. The fact is people are willing to work there for that wage.

Lets look at cops and firefighters. We can all agree that they don't get paid enough. So why don't they get paid more we all think they are worth it? Because they are willing to do that job for that wage.

They listen. They give people what they want but refuse the sacrifice quality. Its the main reason they have built the image of the highest quality. Light years ahead of us? We set the world stage with our industrial revolution.

They're different business models. Some companies make $$ by shear volume and others by profit margin.

You can't fault US companies for recognizing that people are willing to sacrifice quality for value. That is knowing your consumer base.

Part of the problem might be that we decided we where willing to put aside pride we had for the things we made for other things. Does that mean the end of the US no. It means a different US. Probably one that a lot of us don't really care for or want.
